Good heavens... what a bunch of idiots...!
I do not know where monkey gland name comes from, but try it! It is really not that bad! Bit bbq - ish. We do have a tendency to name things in a very weird way.. does not sound very appetizing, I know.
By the way, I think "better half" is a sweet term of endearment. |

Here's why it's called "monkey gland sauce".....
In the 1920's people believed that eating monkey glands was the 'fountain of youth'. People believed they could live as long as 120 years if they ate monkey glands.
A combination of tomato cream and mushrooms, created at about the same time, was thought so delicious that it could perform a similar function. And that sauce was eventually given the same name!
(A true South African question. Thanks! Thumbs up <*star*> to you.) |

Most of the above replies prove that some people should never wander into the South African section, or need to rather read more. Google is here for a reason.
Anyway, I never really thought about it that way. I mean some of us just eat and eat and eat. Thats how you find out if something sits well with you or not, not the name. But I get you. (smile) |

according to http://kitschnzinc.blogspot.com/2004/06/monkey-gland-sauce.html
its a made up sauce dating back to the 1950's
it has nothing to do with monkeys or their glands its just called that to add to the machismo asscoatiated with its use on steaks
naming of foodstuffs doems't neccesarily reflect their origin.. for a long time Ketchup was called catsup in the US.
as to you beeing squeamish.. so what. as you now know it has nothign to do with monkeys theres nothign to stop you trying it out. We all need to go out and try things out y'know |

I'm very sure that sauce didn't come from monkey's. It's just a name given to it. A majority of names dont actually make sense, while a minority of names have meaning. Probably the person who created such a dish liked monkeys so much and stupidly gave the name of the dish monkey sauce to spice it up. Names can only be understood by the person who gave the name to the object, person, etc. |

No Monkeys are involved or any of their Glands! It is not know where this name comes from, but it is such an inherent part of South African cuisine that most of us take little heed to the literal meaning of the name.
Monkey-gland sauce has nothing to do with monkeys, but is a very popular South African sauce that usually consists of a marinade of fruit chutney, red wine (or tomato sauce), and hot sauce. It is mostly used to prepare the dish Monkey-gland Steak. |

Pearl, can I join you in being "primitive" ? The first time I say a sign for steak and monkey gland sauce, I though "how yucky, who would want to eat things from monkeys??"
Even although I, by this stage, know what it is made of, I would still not like to eat it, So, yes, a name can spoil one´s appetite for eating it. |

It sounds awful but then again I don't know anything about it. Research it on the computer unless you already know what it's used for. Many odd things in other cultures are used for various reasons. Ask him what it is and what he's using it for. Unless you ask or research it, you never know.....you might like it if you can get past the name. There are many odd names out there for things and sometimes they are just the name that turns you off to it. Keep an open mind and find out! |

I agree - what's in a name re 'better half' why do people use this name for their partner. It says firstly they aren't a whole person without them which can't be healthy and it secondly says that their partner is better than them, which is not good for the self esteem, maybe it was invented by some insecure little needy person who didn't feel like they existed without their boyfriend! Interesting discussion (re better half not the monkey dobe do thinggy whatever that;s about) |

'Better half' yeah, where DID that come from, it's a terrible description. did it used to be funny a long time ago do you think? I don't really know what this question is about either. |

If it actually IS monkey gland sauce, then changing the name isn't going to help much. If it isn't monkey gland sauce, then the name itself might just make it worth your while. Also worth a try, Spanish Fly. |

God I hate that phrase 'better half'. Ughh. It's just so, well, naff. Are you a middle aged mum? By the way, I have no idea what you're going on about, and I wouldn't call anybody 'girl'... |
