Wrong - Basketball was invented in the United States - in Springfield, Massachusetts - this is a well documented fact. in contradiction to what "shanti_g" said soccer is the most popular sport in Israel. basketball is second in his popularty
and it really depends were you come from. i live in Jerusalem and here soccer is more popular then basketball in other cities things can be different.
and yes Israelis won a gold medal in the Olympics but i cant reamember when or in what.

in terms of popularity : basket ball is our main national sport.
every major city or regional council got atleast one famous club.
but when it comes to national pride it's about maccabi tel-aviv.
the team is uniting israel diverse fan clubs under the maccabi flag.
representing israel in euro-league with great success , winnig the last two event's in a row with a supreme power and popularity.

They are extremely popular and play in Europe, America, Latin America and Asia. They have been in the world cup in 1970. Basketball is considered the second most popular sport in Israel under the Israeli Basketball Association. The Israeli basketball team of Maccabi Tel Aviv is among the top teams in Europe, and has won the European championship 5 times, in 1977, 1981, 2001, 2004 and 2005.
Also, Israel has participated in every Olympic Games since 1950, following the Holocaust. Since then, numerous Israeli's have won many awards in the Olympic games. Gal Fridman won the first Olympic gold in the 1994 games for Windsurfing. Hope this helps!

Definitely, soccer, but basketball is a close second place. Israel has won several Olympic medal but only one gold at the last Olympics Gal Friedman won a gold medal for surfing.

Football, they are quite a good team- one thing i have never understood and maybe someone can answer, how come they get to play in some European matches?

It is arguable, but I'd say Basketball first with soccer close second, even though I personally prefer soccer. Unfortunatelly, contrary to someone saying that Israel is very sport oriented country I would say that Israel at the moment does not promote sports as it should. Unless you are world class star like Averbuch, Arik Zeevi and such you can not make good living in Israeli sport

I thinks it is the "Palestinian-Long-Shot", in which Israeli's hold the record. If I'm not mistaken he took ones head off at almost 1-mile away! good shot huh?
