I got a lot of gifts that I thought were either ugly or I had no real use for, but of course I just say a polite thank you with a smile. I personally either ask my friends what they want, or give money if the relation permits it, so that the person could get what they really like for themselves. I wish gift vouchers were more common in Egypt, it realy would save so much wasted money on useless gifts!

My grandparents briefly became Jewish when I was about 14, and on each of the days of Chanukah I was to walk to their house to receive a small gift for my younger brother and I. Well, one particular day, there was a blizzard, and I was forced by my mother to walk through about a foot of snow. I arrived at my grandparent's house and accepted the gifts, then trudged back home, nearly frostbitten. Upon opening our gifts, I realized that my brother had received a delicious looking bag of chocolate coins, while I, on the other hand... received a pair of panties that didn't even fit over one thigh. Of course, it's the thought that counts, and still to this day we have a pretty good laugh over it, but you better believe at that age I was pretty peeved at having gone through all that effort for a pair of toddler sized underoos :-)

All of my gifts have been useful and welcome.
I will say that one year my father bought my mother a waffle iron for their anniversary.
My mother opened the box and said. "a waffle, iron?! So, I can make YOU waffles?!" Bless her heart.
My father returned the gift straight away and returned with a gold bracelet and some flowers.
A much better anniversary gift, wouldn't you agree?

I work at a community centre that accepts donations for the food bank. After Christmas and Easter, they are MANY boxes of chocolates donated because they were an unwanted gift. There are also new nightgowns and sweaters donated as the recipient didn't want or need another one. I am sure that the giver of the gifts was warmly thanked and went away feeling they had chosen the perfect gift

Blue Utopia

My birthday was just last December and my friends got me the worst gift ever. A watch! Of course I pretended that I loved it but in fact I hated it. Because first of all, I already have 2 watches (Swatch) and they're original. The one they got me was fake, not waterproof and looked simply ugly.
I couldn't stand it so I took it back to the store and replaced it with other items that I needed with the same value, cos the store wouldnt give me a refund.
