Wow, what a question.
Wisdom is given and gained
given to you by god.
He (god) giveth wisdom to who he chooseth
And he (man) who attains wisdom has attained great things. This is my pathetic translation of the great quraan. Al bakara.

Gained, as the days go by. It is the climax of experience. we all learn from our mistakes and those of others. Wisdom is how we use this knowledge. How we use our experience.

Wisdom is gained through experience, therefore you need to live to gain that experience and then you might have the wisdom to show others.

Ismail Eliat
I believe knowledge is found in books, in an education setting, even online. Everywhere-be In Egypt or Indonesia!!!! Wisdom is found through experience and from God. Knowledge is human powered. Wisdom is God powered. All the Prophet's were given wisdom. So seek their ways to attain it.

Salloo7a
You don't gain wisdom, it's granted to some people and polished by experience in life.
I know that someone has wisdom by his/her course of actions and how these actions affect his/her life and other people related to him/her.
Am I considered having wisdom? ... I could not possibly tell, better ask someone who knows me :)

Wisdom is the ability to see behind the obvious to think about all consequences of a given action.

Wisdom could be gained through increasing yr knowledge and through yr lifetime experiences. But what is more important is learning from those experiences not just living them.

As for me having wisdom or not, that is for other people to judge.

Wisdom can be gained by experiences in life, and the experiences in life r in facing a problem & think how to solve it, that way people gains wisdom

For me, i think i have a little bit of wisdom, coz i think i faced some serious problems & i thought how to fix them,
As a matter of fact, i am still facing some problems & try to find the way to solve them

Its a human nature, when he faces a problem & solve it, another problem appears to him & then he will be die trying to solve it
Also, i think all the problems r tests from GOD ( ALLAH ) to our faith in him

First of all I was surprised, is there any relationship between wisdom and Egypt?

Any way,

Wisdom is an ability, capability to get maximum best suitable/honourable/appropriate output out of our input.

If we remove the words, best suitable, honourable, appropriate, from above definition of wisdom, the same sentence becomes the definition of intelligence.

So we may define intelligence, capability and ability to get maximum output out of our input, by any means, even by good or bad means.

Our wisdom gives moral and ethics parameters/limitations to our intelligence. It is the mother of all religions and morals in this way. It creates the element of good or bad, right or wrong in our life.

The best intelligent way to get money is to steel it from someones pocket but our wisdom tells us it is not the right way.

WISDOM IS TO FIX CERTAIN RULES AND REGULATIONS IN OUR LIFE TO PASS A SYSTEMATIC LIFE.

For me the Atheists are the people the most intelligent but not so wise.

Fasting can increase our wisdom, the pains and sorrows of life result in its increase in our self. Allah swt. puts us in examinations and hard tests to increase our wisdom, the patience and the consistency to be on the right track, even we feel difficulties, gives us more and more wisdom.

If I'm a good Muslim, it means I have wisdom.

(maaf, saya lupa ayat berapa, tapi saya hafal bunyi ayatnya, yaitu : laysal birro an tuwallu wujuuhakum qibalal masyaariqi wal maghribi walaakinnal birro man, aamana billaahi...... terus sampai satu ayat. )

THE-GREEN-VISITOR
Wisdom is thinking beyond the surface. Gaining wisdom achieved by deep thinking in every thing in life.
Knowing that someone has a wisdom can't be, in most cases, from first sight. Wisdom appears the most in difficult, complex situations or when someone has to choose from among several critical choices or when he has to face HIMSELF.
And yes I think I have some wisdom.

Duke of Tudor
Most psychologists regard wisdom as distinct from the cognitive abilities measured by standardized intelligence tests. Wisdom is often considered to be a trait that can be developed by experience, but not taught. When applied to practical matters, the term wisdom is synonymous with prudence. Some see wisdom as a quality that even a child, otherwise immature, may possess independent of experience or complete knowledge. The status of wisdom or prudence as a virtue is recognized in cultural, philosophical and religious sources. Some define wisdom in a utilitarian sense, as foreseeing consequences and acting to maximize the long-term common good.

As such, in general, wisdom is looked at his/her ideals and principles that govern all actions and decisions. Applications of personal wisdom include one's ethical and social guidelines in life that determines one’s unique style of personality, the particular nature of short and long-term goal(s) pursued in life (spiritual or materialistic for example), perspective on life, social attitudes, etc.

Some religions have specific teachings relating to wisdom. In Mesopotamian Religion and Mythology Enki, also known as Ea, was the God of wisdom and intelligence. Wisdom was achieved by restoring balance.

In Norse mythology, the god Odin is especially known for his wisdom often acquired through various hardships and ordeals involving pain and self-sacrifice. In one instance he plucked out an eye and offered it to MĂmir, guardian of the well of knowledge and wisdom, in return for a drink from the well. In another famous account, Odin hanged himself for nine nights from Yggdrasil, the World Tree that unites all the realms of existence, suffering from hunger and thirst and finally wounding himself with a spear until he gained the knowledge of runes for use in casting powerful magic. He was also able to acquire the mead of poetry from the giants, a drink of which could grant the power of a scholar or poet, for the benefit of gods and mortals alike.

In Islam, according to the Qur'an Mohammed was chosen by God to represent his wisdom. Mohammed said that: "Fearing God in your actions and intentions, and knowing that Almighty God is watching you wherever and whenever you are is the head/peak of wisdom". In addition, Islam also mentions that a wise man with the name of Luqman once told his son to: "Sit with the learned men and keep close to them. Allah gives life to the hearts with the light of wisdom as Allah gives life to the dead earth with the abundant rain of the sky".

In the Christian Bible, the magi (or "wise men") are sent by God to give the newly born Jesus three types of gifts. Wisdom is also represented by the sense of justice of the lawful and wise king Solomon, who asks God for wisdom in 1 Kings 3. Proverbs 9:10 says: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," and 8:13 "To fear the Lord is to hate evil;” The Catholic and Orthodox deuterocanonical books of the Bible include the Book of Wisdom (Wisdom of Solomon).

There is an oppositional element in Christian thought between secular wisdom and Godly wisdom. The apostle Paul states that worldly wisdom thinks the claims of Christ to be foolishness. However, to those who are being saved Christ represents the wisdom of God. (1 Corinthians 1:17-31) Also, Wisdom is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The seventh verse of the first chapter of the Jewish Proverbs states "Fear of God is the beginning of Wisdom" (Proverbs 1:7). The beginning of fear of God hates evil, the ways of evil, arrogance, pride and a duplicitous mouth (Proverbs).

Confucius stated that wisdom can be learned by three methods: Reflection (the noblest), imitation (the easiest) and experience (the bitterest). According to "Doctrine of the Mean," Confucius also said, "Love of learning is akin to wisdom. To practice with vigor is akin to humanity. To know to be shameful is akin to courage (zhi,ren,yi..three of Mengzi's sprouts of virtue)." Compare this with the beginning of the Confucian classic "Great Learning" which begins with "The Way of learning to be great consists in manifesting the clear character, loving the people, and abiding in the highest good" one can clearly see the correlation with the Roman virtue "prudence," especially if one transliterates clear character as clear conscience.

Buddha taught that a wise person is endowed with good bodily conduct, good verbal conduct & good mental conduct (AN3:2) and a wise person does actions that are unpleasant to do but give good results and doesn’t do actions that are pleasant to do but give bad results (AN4:115). This is called karma. The Buddha has much to say on the subject of wisdom including:

* He who arbitrates a case by force does not thereby become just (established in Dharma). But the wise man is he who carefully discriminates between right and wrong.
* He who leads others by nonviolence, righteously and equitably, is indeed a guardian of justice, wise and righteous.
* One is not wise merely because he talks much. But he who is calm, free from hatred and fear, is verily called a wise man.
* By quietude alone one does not become a sage (muni) if he is foolish and ignorant. But he, who, as if holding a pair of scales, takes the good and shuns the evil, is a wise man; he is indeed a muni by that very reason. He who understands both good and evil as they really are is called a true sage.

In Taoism Practical Wisdom may be described as knowing what to say and when to say it.

I have collected some quotations about wisdom:

"Wise men say nothing in dangerous times." ~ Aesop

"When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years." ~ Mark Twain

"I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us, that the less we use our power the greater it will be." ~ Thomas Jefferson

"Patience is the companion of wisdom." ~ St. Augustine

"Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." ~ Plato

"Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers." ~ Alfred Lord Tennyson

"It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf." ~ Walter Lippmann

"All I know is that I know nothing." ~ Socrates

The definition of wisdom..the most tough word to define..can be.....
Wisdom is a good sense and the ability to make sensible decisions,
And to have judgments based on personal knowledge and experience and good sense shown in the way of thinking, judgment, or action,
And to practise accumulated knowledge of life or of a sphere of activity that has been gained through experience ..all
Within the Jurisdiction of Moral Sphere.
Wisdom comes by purifying ones soul of all the vices, and shunning all the evil bonds that tie a person down and when Lucifer inside him is dead will he become Truely Wise...the keeper of Wisdom.
So we can remark that sages are wise and thus have wisdom, while as thieves are clever. Also to be wise in the ways of the world means to be clever.
Wisdom is an attribute only gifted to few by God.
Intelligence is given to all depending upon their brain capacity...
No wise man ever claimed to be having wisdom, infact the more they had it , the more gentle and submissive they became.

Wisdom is that, where you know only the buttom result but do not know about its real definitions. Like a Mom says to her kids "don't touch live current wire" But she do not tell what will happen if they touch that, why in it etc.. so that mum is wisdom. But I do not consider wisdom. They should explain what it is, why it is.

"ASL-I-KULLU'L-KHAYR

(Words of Wisdom)

In the Name of God, the Exalted, the Most High

The source of all good is trust in God, submission unto His command, and contentment with His holy will and pleasure.

The essence of wisdom is the fear of God, the dread of His scourge and punishment, and the apprehension of His justice and decree.

The essence of religion is to testify unto that which the Lord hath revealed, and follow that which He hath ordained in His mighty Book.

The source of all glory is acceptance of whatsoever the Lord hath bestowed, and contentment with that which God hath ordained.

The essence of love is for man to turn his heart to the Beloved One, and sever himself from all else but Him, and desire naught save that which is the desire of his Lord.

True remembrance is to make mention of the Lord, the All-Praised, and forget aught else beside Him.

True reliance is for the servant to pursue his profession and calling in this world, to hold fast unto the Lord, to seek naught but His grace, inasmuch as in His Hands is the destiny of all His servants.

The essence of detachment is for man to turn his face towards the courts of the Lord, to enter His Presence, behold His Countenance, and stand as witness before Him.

The essence of understanding is to testify to one's 156 poverty, and submit to the Will of the Lord, the Sovereign, the Gracious, the All-Powerful.

The source of courage and power is the promotion of the Word of God, and steadfastness in His Love.

The essence of charity is for the servant to recount the blessings of his Lord, and to render thanks unto Him at all times and under all conditions.

The essence of faith is fewness of words and abundance of deeds; he whose words exceed his deeds, know verily his death is better than his life.

The essence of true safety is to observe silence, to look at the end of things and to renounce the world.

The beginning of magnanimity is when man expendeth his wealth on himself, on his family and on the poor among his brethren in his Faith.

The essence of wealth is love for Me; whoso loveth Me is the possessor of all things, and he that loveth Me not is indeed of the poor and needy. This is that which the Finger of Glory and Splendour hath revealed.

The source of all evil is for man to turn away from his Lord and set his heart on things ungodly.

The most burning fire is to question the signs of God, to dispute idly that which He hath revealed, to deny Him and carry one's self proudly before Him.

The source of all learning is the knowledge of God, exalted be His Glory, and this cannot be attained save through the knowledge of His Divine Manifestation.

The essence of abasement is to pass out from under the shadow of the Merciful and seek the shelter of the Evil One.

The source of error is to disbelieve in the One true God, rely upon aught else but Him, and flee from His Decree.

True loss is for him whose days have been spent in utter ignorance of his self.

The essence of all that We have revealed for thee is Justice, is for man to free himself from idle fancy and imitation, discern with the eye of oneness His glorious handiwork, and look into all things with a searching eye.

Thus have We instructed thee, manifested unto thee Words of Wisdom, that thou mayest be thankful unto the Lord, thy God, and glory therein amidst all peoples."
