I found a lovely, inspiring poem about being an African written by Wayne Visser:

I Am An African

I am an African
Not because I was born there
But because my heart beats with AfricaĀ´s
I am an African
Not because my skin is black
But because my mind is engaged by Africa
I am an African
Not because I live on its soil
But because my soul is at home in Africa

When Africa weeps for her children
My cheeks are stained with tears

An African person is someone born whilst being on the continent of Africa.
Only those born in or above international waters can claim the identity of their own choice.
This is why racism is so stupid.

Dorothy was right.....people born and bred in Africa, who accept Africa as their homeland....whose culture is rooted in Africa...are Africans.

I sometimes look at white South Africans who pretend that they are not Africans, despite they being the fifth generation in this country.......a race is just a race......maybe we should find another way of defining this thing called 'black&white'.....I lived in Britain, and despite what some want us to believe...their culuture is different from the culture of whites in South Africa.....in fact I'm waiting to see any country which has the same culture of white South Africans....

brown african = brown coloured person from africa
yellow african = yellow coloured person from africa
black african = black coloured person from africa

There will always be cultural diversity between different races all around the world. The country that you are born in dictates your nationality, whether one group likes it or not. If you were born in Africa then you are African. It is the history of white intervention on the African continent that African people resent, quite justifiably so in my opinion.

Even though I am classed as white/European (actually more light brown - and more so in Summer) I was born in South Africa, and lived my childhood, teenage, and some adult years under the warm African sun.
I am African and very proud to be African!

Even though I may emigrate, I am NOT Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, American, English, Irish, German, Italian, Spanish or whatever.
I may live in these countries but these are not the country of my birth, the country that has helped define me, make me what I am today, and provide the bench mark with which I associate and measure myself.

Being African is not something that one can just wash away, deny or cancel when one feels like it.
For if I am not African then surely I must be something else, but what else could I be?

If what you are saying was true then why are South African Asians constantly referred to as Chines or Indian even though their grandparents were born here.

Look at the Americans they You get Irish, African, Latin, Asia American and they are no less of American.

I think you should not feel less of a South African because you are not African.

Well I am an African and proud to be one, my family has been here since 1703, anyway a Black person in America cannot be an African if he was not born here, they any way call them African american. have you also heard people speaking about Caucasian and asian and ******* features? You are defined from where you are born, in that sense. There are Arab Africans, Caucasian Africans, Bushmen (which a ***** will call an animal-literally) Africans-it's a big piece of land.
