I just finished reading Awlad Haretna (The Children of Gebelawi or Children of our Alley) by Naguib Mahfouz for the second time... As controversial as it is i think its nice reading material.
I equally love work by Tawfiq El hakim... name any of his books... I would have read it and enjoyed it.
As for English language fiction... I Enjoyed reading The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown... I think the book is so much superior to the movie.
I like reading Classical books too... I recently finished Dante's The Divine Comedy (I read it in Spanish "La Comedia Divina" as I think its a closer language to the original Italian and might give me a better feel of the author)
Homer's Illiad and the Odyssey is part of the Human legacy... and I have read it too within that context... although I have to admit I didn't enjoy reading it that much...
My next reading project is Chicago... By Alaa El Aswany... But I'm a little pressed in time these days... can't find the book in any of the bookshops close to my house or work... Dar El shorook are trying to monopolize it being a best seller.
Edit: I almost forgot I've been reading for some time now Sun Tzu's "The Art of War"... Its not a novel but it is one of the most influential books ever written on strategy, nice stuff. |

I was late to answer because rarely when I read novels. I read many other things and I will try to remember now what was the last Novel or true story.
- Ze2b fe Qurs el Shams - Mohamed Abdel Meneim
This was a true story of Egyptian Air-force Fighters between 1968 and 1970. The author was the radio officer and close friend of most of them. I recommend it for any one who likes to read about true heroic stories.
I don't want to answer out of topic and mention other kinds of readings. |

There are many others but this one stuck to me. It's a favorite of many teachers who wish their students to read it too.

Radwa Ashour's Granada trilogy. It's beautiful, yet heartbreaking; about the last days of the Arabs in Andalusia. It's amazing how we don't learn from our history and are still repeating the same mistakes hundreds of years later. The parallels to our modern day history are chilling. |
