I think that you would find it difficult to avoid the market, so swing into it preferably late in the day, you may see a story teller with a rapt audience, a letter writer, a snake charmer, even a donkey smoking a cigarette..so much to dip into and remember. Get a guide, they are cheap and you help out with their income, let him take you to the souks, he will go to his friends of course but you will see some fascinating workshops..if you have some money you could buy a carpet, you don't have to carry it, it will be shipped to your home. I bought a lovely blue rug and it always reminds me of Marrakech. A guide will not force you to buy so do try! If you are daring ask the guide if he would take you around to see where ordinary Moroccans live, my most amazing thing was to see the some women getting ready for a wedding ceremony and then saw the bride being carried off on a big metal tray!
Enjoy yourself!!
Riad is less touristy but again you can get a view of every day life in a more sophisticated town. |

The obvious is to sit on the cafe terrace that overlooks the market. Less obvious but the best fun I had is to leave Marrakesh and go up towards the mountains in a hire car or as part of a tour. You go through acres of Orange trees and then nothing prepares you for the physical beauty of the Atlas mountains - awesome |

It's a great place, the souk, the sights smells and food.Just don't get caught by the rope trick .you are allowed to win once or twice then the stakes go up and if you win again suddenly you are surrounded and there are knives on show from under the robes. It happened to me in the old square. Also my girlfriend was touched a lot.Don't let her expose too much flesh in the evenings.Otherwise everything is wonderful. |

Do what you like, be careful of smoking the hookahs (bongs) though as sometimes they put tobacco in there instead of hashish.... |

i ve been - its really nice - go to do shopping and visit beach. try and go to capital Rabat as its nice, you good to try the mint tea and kebabs cooked outside on grill. BEWARE of pick pocketers though, they are ruthless there, so dont try and stand out from locals. try not to give money to beggers, as if you do they will all stick to you like glue.
it also has historic sites, gardens in old fort. you can also get a good henna tattoo...
have fun |

Marrakech is a sensorial experience, the beauty of the sight is one aspect of it. make sure you visit the market (zouc) and the food market at night. You can eat there without a problem, just eat only cooked things. The orange juices sold during the day are safe too.
Careful, marrakech can be overwhelming. So take it easy. Don't get upset at people, be discreet, respectful and when people say hello, say hello. When people try to sell you something, say thank you and end the firmly there, carry on your journey. I believe your attitude is key for the experience you'll have.
Marroquis are fantastic! So nice!
You'll love it.
Your Riad will already blow your sight away.
And the best: JARDIN DE MAJOREL
I would say the beauty of marrakech is beyond the beauty of the things, museums... the best is the atmosphere. Visit the market (zouc), eat |

go to the huge market.....but get a guide or you'll get lost. there are unofficial guides who are hired by a government agency and then you pay them set rates or you'll find someone or they'll find you. expect to haggle for everything and to pay around a third - half of original asking price. Try to look as though you know what you're doing ! La Shokran means no thank you & don't be afraid of emphasis! Many people speak English &/or French and r ok. InchAllah means God/Allah willing & indicates more fatalistic approach. My spellings are phonetic. I hope you enjoy your trip. |

Visit the Djemaa al Fna, shop in the medina, and go to the Majorelle Gardens.
(Also, ignore the numerous crap about magic and donkeys and sheep - Marrakech is a large, half-modern city, with wonderful people and delicious foods) |

I visited there some years ago. It was manic. The smell in the market was horrendous but the piles of sheeps eyes for sale were an experience. The beggars and street sellers are persistant and sometimes abusive if you don't pay. Be positive and don't waver or they see weakness and won't leave you alone. Just keep walking. Don't be tempted to visit anyone in their home, as some of them invite you to do. It's a trap to get money and/or your possessions. Don't buy cheap watches as they will not have anything inside.
It's as safe as anywhere else in the world, as long as you keep your wits about you. Have fun. |
