What should I do whilst in Kenya?

I am planning a trip to Mombassa Kenya next year. I have never been before so would like info from people who have been. If I only did one trip whilst I am there, what should it be??

Kenya is a fantastic place to visit, good choice. When I was there I did a safari to the Somburu, probably the most worthwhile one, visited Treetops to spot the wildlife overnight, went to Lake Narvasha, then mossied on down to the Masai Mara. Then flew to Mombassa for a week on the beach.
The Somburu, although my favourite of them, is probably too far to get to if you are going to Mombassa. Same goes for Treetops as the Lake. You might be able to get to the Masai Mara where there are a lot of lions I seem to remember. The locals open their villages as well for you to look round, but they do charge an awful lot just for a look. There are some local safari's though from Mombassa, check with the Kenyan tour called Somark, and they are probably the best and most knowledgeable of the area. Plus they were the cheapest. When you are in Mombassa jump on the tuc-tuc's (little mini vans that are overcrowded) and get off at different spots. The locals were really good and wouldn't let us get off a couple of places as they said it was too rough. There was also a reptile visitors centre in Mombassa which had a huge tortoise, I think it was 100 years old or something, crocodiles in the river and snakes and such like. The cafe there did an amazing crocodile sandwich and you sit just above the river watching the crocs themselves. There was also the Fort Jesus which you can do on Mombassa by night, well recommended, where you eat a lovely meal in the fort, followed by a sound and light show, then we went onto a casino and cabaret. To get to the fort we caught a boat and sailed down the river. There is a guide with you the whole time. The beaches are gorgeous as well especially if you get a hotel room looking out onto the sea. I really envy you going there, wish I could go back myself.

Definitely a safari to the Tsavo or Amboseli if possible.... you might even be there on time to see the great migration! You could also go to Lamu....beautiful, beautiful town with no cars! That is definitely and experience to have. Enjoy your trip!

go instead to Zanzibar Tanzania and do the same as people advised you here: safaris, etc'. in Tanzania you will be much safer than in Kenya

I went last year.

Go have a look at the wood carving co-operative.
Please buy from there rather than beach boys.

Go on Safari, it's a must..........

Anything else is a bonus.

Scuba Diving/boat trip is good. Oh and a dohw trip is good.

ENJOY............................

KENYA IS SAFE.

First thing you should do is take a picture of the tusks at the entrance to mombassa. Then go to the beach, try malindi or diani, they are only a short trip up the coast(1hour or 2). Try alll the watersports and scuba diving, it's amazing! try to fly up to nirobi - don't drive! theroad is aweful and takes about ten hours plus-i'm speaking from excperiance. Ypou have to go to Tsavo WEST national park, i went there on my last visit and saw tones of animals (don't go to the east, there is f**k all there!). i hope you find this helpful, i have been to kenya five times and loved them all. P.S if you only do one of these go to Tsavo WEST. Have a great trip i'm sure you will!

I think you should try to go on a safari, even if it's only a brief one, to see some magnificent creatures in their natural settings while you still can. Take care and enjoy your trip.

"Jambo". I envy you, have you any room in your suitcase for me ? I went there in 2000 brilliant time. Mombasa itsself is a very, how can i say novel city, just being there is an experience in its self. You dont want to go all that way without some sort of safari excursion. I went on a few that stuck out in my mind. One was to Shimba hills lodge, see if you can spend a night there, it's straight out of "Tarzan". See if you can go to "Tsavo" to catch a glimpse of how the "Masai" live. And another experience for me wasto visit a local school, try and take pencils and a few books to donate, they will really appreciate it. I could go on all day, take plenty of film, and keep an open mind, you will have an experience that you will allways remember, not forgetting how freindly everyone is, and brush up on your Swahili, a few words go a long way, as with any other country.

Don't miss the safari, it's well known for safari.

I guess the populist choice would be to go on safari...if like me you like literature and Karen Blixen, the museum dedicated to her may be worth a trip...
