Hi Ms.Miche, There are no moderate Muslims, only Muslims. Muslims are compelled by their religion to Jihad (struggle) in order to 'return' the World to the Caliphate, and thus universal Sharia law...This is the first Jihad (struggle)..the second Jihad is the 'internal struggle' for spiritual refinement. The second Jihad can only take place upon the completion of the First Jihad..World Domination by Islam, which will bring 'Peace' to the Planet..hence 'Islam is a Religion of Peace'..Muslims cannot be lukewarm, or they simply are not Muslim..The directives in the Qur'an cannot be altered in any manner..Reformation is impossible..Moderate Muslim is an oxymoron. Peace. |

they could organize rallies around the world condemning terrorism and showing that Islam itself does not encourage violence and hate, and that the hate and violence comes from terrorists who misinterpret the religion. |

Moderate Muslims should have the confidence to study their Quran and learn what it really means so they can challenge the ignorant extremists who claim to be so pure.
The Quran certainly does not permit, let alone advocate, attacks on defenseless civilians and children. Nor does it forbid pictures of pigs or fairy tales about pigs, as some seem to think.
They should certainly report any suspicious activities they learn of to the police, for the safety of the public.
I wonder why some leaders have not issued a fatwa forbidding terrorism; if they have, I haven't heard of it.
They need to enter into discussions and study groups with other Muslims, to discuss the issues that are dividing Islam: terrorism, tolerance, women's rights, halal and haram of all sorts. This is a matter that has to be dealt with within Islam.
Non-Muslims really can't tell Muslims how to express their religion, they can only make suggestions. |

If they do crime against other humans and/or animals, they should pay fines and go to jail until they are rehabilitated. Same as with any other criminal extremist, "religious" or otherwise. |

It is my belief that in the Middle East a moderate Muslim is one who is temporarily out of ammunition. So what you suggest is not possible. |

The moderates should declare jihad on the extremists. |

Good question.
Actually they should learn from us ( after some Holocausts and things like that) |

they should announce their opposition openly and protest against the terrorist activities, demanding to their governments that they want an honest peace with israel |

A moderate Muslim bears as much responsibility for extremism as a Swiss Catholic for Irish terrorists. Or an Argentine Jew for IDF's actions.
Nazis passed Nuremberg Laws, partly, because Jewish leaders had aligned with communism.
If you are that suggesting all Muslims have a duty to actively respond to radical Islam, you are giving Nuremberg laws a certain degree of justification. (As most German Jews never fulfilled their duty to protest against their leaders' alignment.)
So basically that remains an option. A logical choice, but not a duty. |

It is more than denouncing the atrocities that is required. Many muslims openly support the actions of terrorists. In the UK they never believe that muslims are guilty of anything and have challenged the police when they have been collecting evidence.
Once these terrorists are convicted their supporters disappear into the ether. They very rarely condemn anything done by another muslim. |

Contact their local mosques & organize protests in the streets.
Show remorse when innocent non-Muslims are killed by radical Muslims. |

They already denounce terrorism and those that distort Islam for their cause, problem is it usually is not reported by the media. That leaves people believing moderates don't denounce it and therefore approve of extremists and terrorism. I don't know what more they could or even should do. I'm kind of like you in regards to not being a religious person, but I was raised as a Christian, you may have been raised practicing Judaism(I have never seen you post about that,so I'm unsure). My point is I am not responsible for bad acts by Christians and you are not responsible for bad acts by Jewish folks. Muslims are not responsible for bad acts of other Muslims(unless they're the "master mind). Islam is probably as misunderstood as Judaism to those not of those faiths. |

Islam has a very deep mentality and way of thinking. you can't talk our a fanatic from being a fanatic. you just cant do that. a fanatic muslim understands the world with a distorter vision. he feels like the good one that he is always the victim. he has many complexes of inferiority and often they are sexually frustrated which leads them to extremism.
how can a moderate muslim take that out from a radical muslim?
also, what's a radical and what's a moderate muslim. the line between those two is never clear. |

I don't necessarily think that they are obligated to do anything. Anyone who doesn't know by now that the vast majority of Muslims are not represented by the extremely vocal minority probably already has a pretty solid bigotry that they are not about to change anytime soon. Likewise, the hardliners are not likely to soften their positions no matter how much pressure the moderates put on them. The only thing I think the moderate Muslims should do is just keep doing what they've been doing. |

What should moderate Christians do to counteract radical extremists like ETA who may contradict their peaceful religion? What should moderate Jews do to counteract extremist settlers who occupy the West Bank and attack Palestinian farmers and demolish their homes?
In all serious now, what can I do? Phone them up long distance and ask them kindly to be moderate? Cheers! |

By help and support them to resist tyranny of Israel.
No way except peace based on justice.
Because there are not radical extremists in Islam religion, but there are people forced to champion and plead about their land home and kids.
