Learn Hebrew and then learn Ladino and Yiddish. Those languages are part of our culture and should be preserved.

Depends what you want to do with these languages.

There are far more people speaking Yiddish than Ladino.

Yiddish is the language Ashkenazi Jews spoke throughout most of Eastern Europe until the Holocaust when the language became a minority and somewhat eccentric language to speak except as a lingua franca amongst Jews from different countries.

Today only some ultra-orthodox Jews speak it as their first language but there are still many people alive who spoke it at home in their youth. Yiddish words and phrases still abound in Jewish culture and have even entered the mainstream especially in the US.

There is a large corpus of Yiddish literature but as Yiddish is traditionally written using Hebrew orthography that may be a bit of a hurdle if you don't read Hebrew.

Whereas Yiddish is really a dialect of German with Hebrew, Polish and Russian words added in, Ladino was the language of the Jews of Spain and Portugal, the Sepahardi community. It was later spoken in Italy and Greece and parts of North Africa and Turkey. It is based on old Castilian with Hebrew, French and other languages added in depending the dialect.

Unlike Yiddish, Ladino is dying out.

So, if you want to help preserve a language, learn Ladino.
If you want to to absorb the immense culture surrounding Yiddish and its nuanced literature and music learn Yiddish. There are many courses now in Yiddish but I know of none in Ladino.

I'd go for yiddish, lots of literature, theater and neat phrases if you get my drift :)

it really depends on your linguistic affinities... if you have some knowledge of germa, it will be easier to learn yiddish. if you have knowledge of spanish/portuguese/italian, it will be easier to learn ladino.
the question is also what is your motivation for learning one of these languages.
if it's for the literature... yiddish. if it's for the beautiful songs... i'd go for ladino. some spanish linguists study ladino as a dialect that preserved some 15-16th century usages of the languages.

Yiddish. It is a wonderful language and has almost died out thanks to the holocaust.
Yiddish captures so many sentiments in just a few words and how the word is said.
Of all the languages in the world, Yiddish is the most colorful and most exciting, in my mind. Also, some of us are trying to revivie it. It should not be allowed to die out.

I would forget them both.

We need to remind ourselves that we have regained our former glory, we have freed our land (well most of it, still some squatters left), and restored our way of life.

We should forget the languages that came about around the times of our people's oppression, and just embrace our regular Hebrew, the 4,000 year old language that God gave us.
