Whats so great about egypt?

I dont get why everyone is so 'in love' with egypt. Why do people think it is the most lively and fun place around? Spend a few weeks here and yes I can guarentee people a good time, but after living here for two and a half years ignorance of cairoians turned into nothing but irritation and annoyance. The fun in egypt died after the first month of being here, you go to alexandria and check out the beach, you go to Ain sukhna and do the same thing, you go to giza and check out the pyramids and ride the horses and camels, you shop in khan al khalili, ataba and city stars in Cairo. Shop at all the 'lower' malls and there isnt even alot I'll name them now; Genenah Mall, Tiba Mall, Siraj Mall and the mall at the nile river. Then if you want to you can head on over to 6 of october and go to the amusment park.

Thats it.

Most of those things are attractions for older people, I'm seventeen & yea it was cool to see the pyramids but after while it gets normal. Whats a teen to do here?

I understand where you're coming from & it's sad to see that so many answerers are critisizing your opinion & aren't mature enough to realise that you're not attacking them and disrespecting their home. Egypt IS a wonderful country if you want to experience some culture & history - exactly as you said - that's all well & fine when you're experiencing the place for the first couple of times. But Historical attractions aside (as great as they are) *living* in Egypt is a completely different story. Sure the people who live there would visit these places and experience all their country has to offer historically & culturally but you can't do that everyday. You need regular, FUN, teen stuff to do & not to offend anyone here but Egypt is not the perfect place for that. It all really comes down to not where you're going or what you're doing but more who you're with. Something boring may become more enjoyable in the company of friends. Also Egypt is still a developing country, so if you came from a country that was pretty westernized or developed then living in Egypt may feel like you've taken a massive step backwards. And as for joining groups and clubs, there aren't too many of those in Egypt unless perhaps your in University and even then they are limited. Egyptians are very sensitive, they tend to think that every comment made which doesn't involve you pledging your love for their country is a personal attack on them, which it isn't so i completely agree with you on some of them being ignorant. Just ignore those people and listen to the friendly egyptians who are UNBIASED and will help you out with this kind of thing.

It's human-nature for us to love our country. Just like it is human nature to love our home, our friends and our parents.
We're only human. Trying to survive. We can't live in a place and say that we hate it so much. Surviving is all about "learning" how to love some place.
If you can't learn how to find the beauty in Egypt, then I advice you to leave. All the nagative energy will do you no good.
This is an honest advice. If you convince yourself that the place here is awful, then you will feel sad and depressed. On the other hand, if you try to put yourself in the places of the people who live here on a daily basis, then you will be happier. We do have teenagers here in Egypt. They're living a normal life. Mingle with them. Make some friends.
Try to "survive". That's my honest advice to you.

Maybe the problem is not the place but one's attitude? You could be in Paris or Las Vegas or Madrid or Moscow or any great place in the world, but if you will take your pessimistic and subjective attitude with you then the place where you at really matters not...

Does anyone here know how to repair squeeky attitude? We got a rusty one ;-)

Hi there, this is no surprise to read, i know many people of similar age that felt the same,i am 23, we have formed a club between us where we meet at least 4 times a week at the coffee shop & stand on our soap boxes & put the world to rights! LOL
If you have good company it does not matter where you are in the world.
I hope you realise soon that this is a Great Country because what ever you think wont change that, I have lived in many Countries because of my fathers business & this is the best ever, we never want to leave. We are in England at the moment, it has been cold, wet, windy & bad news on the t.v. each day.. Do we want to stay here = NO WE DONT.. WE WANT TO GO HOME WE miss all our friends Egyptian & European & Saturday cant come quick enough for me & my family!
I agree totally agree with Kassandra.

my answer is based on your primary question only...sorry i didn't read below..i didnt read it so that i give you non biased answer..without knowing you have positive or negative feelings about it..
What's so great about Egypt:
the geographical location is really unique
the Nile
the heritage
the people, human resources is enormous (i know this would be arguable, but i have my strong logical standpoints too)
the diversity of resources
this is my own opinion of what's so great about Egypt!

destiny
well , you just killed my desire to go to Egypt!
now, i know that i am not missing out.
Yea, when you are young a person need more
than malls to keep one occupied.
What about friends? Did you make any?

Hi, I understand your feelings, I have been here 11 years. It gets hard at times. I was used to the mountains and going there everyweekend, didn't cost money to go hiking the trails, or rollerblading or cycling.

Plus I had my family to go have a snowball fight on a frozen lake to hang out with. 4X4ing and getting stuck in the mountains was loads of fun too. Watching the planes take off at night. Of course these are all fun but it was the company that made it a memory.

If you make friends here in Egypt it will help you alot. Having someone to hang out with. I see them on the nile hanging out together and laughing.

I haven't made friends, I only work and I have my husband and kids, no other family members to go around. Its hard on me.

Been to the pyramids around 5 or 6 times, the museum twice went to Magicland and it wasn't magical at all. Got to ride the rides only once, a signed ticket. Dreampark is much better. If you know any other options other then the clubs, I would apprieciate it too.

AA
Look its simple your seventeen and a female you will not be having a ball but you are nearly at the age to be going to the AUC or City University where you will make new and exciting friends that will bring some interest in your life.

My guess is that you are what could be classed as home sick well let me tell you that when you go home it will not be the same as when you left it places change, people change.

Try joining some clubs and societies to further expand your interests and if you don't then please don't blame Egypt for you being bored because boring people get bored and I'm sure that you don't want to be bored.

You can find out about groups and clubs at ex pat societies and if there isn't one to interest you set one up

Good luck

Well its the sense of belonging, as human beings every one needs to feel he belongs somewhere. And this somewhere becomes his everything.

On the outside Egypt as a country might seem to a non Egyptian or even to an Egyptian like an average or below average place. Its like every where else, streets, buildings, malls, cars, shops etc...

But what you miss is what lies beneath the surface, a country is not just what you see of it, its the layers of history that lead it to become what it has become, its the accumulation of experiences that made its people who they are.

The thrill of walking on the footsteps of great men who were inspired by the place, touching the stones that artists have carved and practically feeling their love and dedication, looking at the face of a person in the street and thinking he might be a direct decendant of an ancient Egyptian who contributed in building the pyramids, or even trying to discover the real reasons behind why so many people today have become ignorant and superficial as you say, is ignorance an absolute or a relative matter? Could you just be one of those people but don't feel it?

Its like a treasure hunt, you dig deep down (even if you dig through dirt) to find out the meaning of every thing you see around you. This understanding is what gives you appreciation of the place. And the knowledge of why so many people along the ages were fascinated by it, Herodotus, Alexander the great, Cleoparta, Napoleon Bonaparte, 3amr Ibn el 3as and countless names and events. Do you think they were all wrong? Can you try seeing through their eyes!

So its a package with all its negative and positive aspects, I guess maybe you are too young to appreciate that. But trust me, once you just get enough of what you perceive as "fun" life, you'll start to understand what "real" life is. But to do that you have to make an effort to get yourself out of that mould all the younger generations have confined themselves to.

By the way, I'm not ciritsizing you, but I know it because we have all been there.

To explain my self further, have you tried reading a novel by Naguib Mahfouz about the Cairo of the 20s and 30s, and then having a walk in the places he just described in that Novel. Those narrow dusty streets in old cairo with their old buildings, exotic smells and funny looking people. I assure you your perception before and after will be totally different, the Novel will make you look beneath the shell and see worlds you have never seen before.

Then suddenly simple things like those rusty little blue street signs with a name like "El sokkaria" or "Qasr El Shok" get a totally new meaning and will give you "this" extra heart beat that tells you: "you are in love with this place", not becasue its fun, but because you can feel and connect with the souls of all those who walked those streets and alleys before you and left a mark. Not becasue of its external appearance, but because of its inner beauty.

So my advice to you, educate yourself about the place you want to know, and maybe you'll notice that its greatness and beauty goes far beyond how fun its amusement parks are!

Salam

Edit: Sorry for the long "speech" I always start out with the intention of writting something brief and then i get carried away.

Egyptians make big deal of their country that they convinced tourists about OUR HISTORY but it's not the history which attract them it's the magic of the land which is if you came once you must come back again.
if you went abroad i am sure you'll miss Egypt

Egypt and its people has great history. As you said, there are the phyramids. It is one of the wonders of the world until now. There is a saying that when you are in a garden, you must look at the flowers and not the thorns.
As a teenager, you should have researched first before going there to have a mindset on what to expect.

Ruby
Just don't go back there. We don't need you!!!
