That's a great idea.....we need to be sure that we have properly qualified teachers for these subjects........and if the unions to think this is rediculous then the department of education must just force it......I'm tired to the bone by these unions.......their members underperform but always want more.......if there's nothing wrong with the teachers why are they afraid to write the exams??? |

I think it is one excellent idea.
But why leave it at maths & science? Sure these two subjects need a lot of work, but im sure you'd find unqualified teachers at every lesson.
After all, turnabout is fair play... |

I actually support the idea, it's a relatively easy way to ensure that the teachers in classrooms have the necessary knowledge to be teaching children.
If the teachers know their stuff, there's nothing to worry about, is there?
I would just like to know, what they'll do to the teachers that actually fail. |

I support the idea. I learnt later that my so-called maths teacher was a dud. I don't want my children to be victims. |

Yes i do feel they should all take the test i mean they are learning the future of our land and if they know what they are doing why should they be afraid - it is something kids to nearly everyday |

It is actually a good idea! If i remember correctly my maths teacher's knowledge of the subject left a lot to be desired!!! If they are good enough they have nothing to fear in writing the test. |

It's a good idea. After all, we all need refresher courses to enable us to stay on top of things and keep up with the times. I think that it's very important especially when it comes to education. The new generation can only benefit from it and the parents will get their money's worth from the high school fees. |

I think that a psychometric test would be a good supplement. We need passionate maths and science teachers! |

Good idea. If the unions are against it, then it must be because they KNOW that some of their members won´t make the grade. And as stuyvie says, do this with all subjects. This can help to improve the standard of education. |

In answering this question I am thinking of the pass rate of grade 12 learners.
I am of the conviction that anyone who teaches a subject should be able to pass that subject at the level that they are teaching (at least). All other professions have mandatory ongoing professional education, why should teachers be different. If the unions do not enforce this: is that a sign that they want our children to continue struggling to pass or do they want to lower the standards and keep RSA a third world country. Are the people that run these unions ignorant or what.
I say test the teachers and let's see what comes out of the woodwork. |

I have heard the same on the news yesterday and I think it is an excellent idea. This is long overdue. I also think it will be a good idea to get teachers who can actually teach these subjects well. Some of them may have the knowledge on paper but not necessary the ability to transfer that knowledge. The success and the ability for kids to learn these subjects have a lot to do with interest in the subject. If the teachers can’t keep the student interested, how do they learn. . |

.Valuation is a good idea.Only the the teachers who do not have the confidence will call it a ridiculous. They should use the first three letter in ridiculous and and help get... themselves from the teaching profession.

I absolutely agree if the teachers actually know what they are doing they have nothing to fear by taking the test. |

Maths and science teachers are in great shortage all over the world. I think people in these fields should get incentives to go into teaching. I remember even in my days at school that there were times that I had to go to another school in the afternoon or Saturdays to get lectures.I suppose when there is a shortage then they will start to give these positions to unqualified personnel. I do not think that testing these teachers will make much of a difference.
Add:
When I started university there were around fifty students in my math class and the same for physics. By the time we graduated we were three from the original math group and two of the physics group left. The rest dropped out or changed course. |

Why don't they retrain everyone instead of wasting money testing people, basically showing a vote of no confidence to the teachers.
Come on people, teachers take lot of flack in this country, they don't get paid well, parents are lazy to raise their kids so they expect teachers to do for them and they get attacked at work.
End now everyone says they are incompetent it must suck being a teacker everyone is against you.
I just say lets retrain everyone and not point fingers the intensions to test are good but this is not a good way to go it shows a lack trust on the side of the employee. |
