I agree, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. While it is true that the Americans at least have the “right to vote”….their votes don’t always count for everything…It is and always has been an Indirect Democracy..

This time around, it happens to be that Obama got the popular and electoral votes….which is not always the case….This system wouldn’t work in our countries because the Electoral votes would be tampered with and the government would still choose a successor….Our people would just be under the illusion that their votes really matter….

Another question would be, can we trust our people to make the right choice? Although, I agree that it would be at least fair if the “Presidencies” weren’t automatically passed on from father to son and so forth…… but it might be a while before we have legitimate candidates…

** I honestly couldn’t say what the best solution could be :( A good start would be a true separation of State and Religion...

probably never. democracy is a western idea and works in a western context and it has not been shown to be independent of cultural variables. traditions from one culture cannot be lifted wholesale and replanted in a wholly different culture and expected to work just like it did in the source culture.
