Egyptians usually don't visit doctors except when the illness gets complicated, first they visit the nearby pharmacist and ask him for a cure for the symptoms e.g pain or fever
then if the symptoms aren't relieved , then they decide to visit the doctor but after what ??????????????!
After they may develop fatal complications from either wrong prescription or the disease!
and there r some reasons for this the deteriorated economical state is one of them , or they see doctors blackmailing them and not trust worthy , or what we call the" white coat phobia"; they r afraid of doctors! |

Egyptians go to doctors when they have a strong pain or something seem to be not easy to be cured. I never met an Egyptian went to doctor for flue. |

u know what, it is very good u brought this subject up. I was having a discussion with my husband about this. It is a very bad habit here that most Egyptians never go to the doctor until it is too late... If they have a disease or something they will not find out about it unless they have some pain or bad symptoms alerting them that there is something wrong. and once they go to the hospital to see what;s wrong, it will be at a very late stage. They never do a general check-up yearly. I really hate it because this way Egyptians are putting their health at a huge risk. I wish they would do like western countries where they do a regular check up and if they have flu or any minor health problem they run to their physician asking what is wrong. |

I don't know what grade your in or what subject your in but if your in anysort health care program (college level) I would recommend getting a Cultural health assessment book like the one available from mosby. It seems like your looking for some comparison, possibly American to Egyptian? In my experience with the Egyptians I know (married to one, have lived with his family, know tons of his egyptian friends, etc...) it seems like Egyptians will see a doctor much sooner than Americans will. For example in America you get a cold and most people wait about 3 days to go in to see a doctor because we know a cold should start to improve in about 3 days otherwise it may be more serious than just a cold (i.e. strep, pneumonia, etc...). Egyptians want to see the doctor immediately when they are felling like they have a cold. I think another aspect that plays into it is that Egypt does not have the insurance issues that Americans have. They have government health care so they don't have to be concerned as much about visiting the doctor where as many Americans want to be 100% sure they have to see a doctor because many cannot afford health insurance and they don't want uneccesary medical bills. If you have a cold the doctor can't do anything because it just has to run it's course they can't treat a virus so if it's just a cold Americans often choose to wait it out in hopes that they don't have to go to the doctor. I hope that helps you a little bit. |

anytime they feel sick!!specially poor ones, they go for any simple cause once it's free in the public hospitals!!some of them are not wise enough to go early!!they go after they r completely ruined!!anyway!!go to any public hospital you'll find dozens waiting in lines!!they can't even describe their case to the doctor!!either they don't suffer anything or severely damaged!!that what i used to see!!(i was working in a public hospital),they are 60% of the Egyptians!! |

People in Egypt go to the Dr.'s same as every where else in the world, when they get hurt or sick. Although I was in a hospital in Alexandria and the front doors were open and a cat ran down the hall. I was kinda shocked. But just the same as here, or there, or anywhere. If you get sick or hurt, wouldnt you go to the Dr.? |

Egyptian generally go to doctors when they are really sick and fail to medicate themselves.
Antibiotecs and some other medications people can buy from the Pharmacy in Egypt without prescription, therefore it is unlkely that a person has fever to go straight to the doctor.
However, people don't normally take this risk with Children. and they take them to the doctor quite early.
But the above only apply to flue and other common illnesses.
There are a variety of medical services in Egypt. Although, doctors' fees are quite expensive to the average Egyptian, there are other alternatives such as low cost clinics run from mosques and churches which provide really good service with very low price. the reason being that some Doctors donate 1 or 2 hours of their times to spend in these clinics as a support to the community. I find this great.
all the best with your project. |
