The original partition plan called for all of the former "Palestinian Territory" to be divided equally between the Arab and Jewish inhabitants. That would have been the 2 State Solution, had the Muslim countries agreed to it.
But in a land grab bid, the Arabs threatened war with the French who had been given the post WWI mandate over the northern territory. Wanting to avoid another war so soon after WWI and WWII, the British finally agreed to carve a huge chunk (more than 75%) out of the territory and hand it over to an Arab who set up another Islamic monarchy, much like what Saudi Arabia has. This was the first failed "land for peace" deal and if Britain had stood their ground, the next 60 years would not have gone the way it did.
The portion that originally was supposed to be set aside for Israel included all of modern day Israel, as well as all of Samaria and Judea and small portions of what eventually went to Trans-Jordan (now Jordan), Syria and Lebanon.
Once those pieces were carved out of what was supposed to become Israel, Jews from all over the Middle East were forced to evacuate and leave the countries their families had lived in for centuries. And while they were being cleansed another group consisting of newly migrated Arabs, Syrians, and Egyptians to Israel set out to carve out yet another piece by claiming that Jordan was not their country. They demanded yet more land to make yet another Islamic country, as though 22 of them in that region wasn't enough.
Only this time they didn't demand an out of the way stretch of land on the east side of the Jordan River or a small chunk in some border community; they demanded the Holiest Site in the Holiest City in all Judaism to falsely claim as their own.
As history has proven though, every time they get another chunk, the remaining Muslim community divides like a cancer and claims they aren't represented by the new government and demands more. Those of us who've been around awhile have seen this happen with the original Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and now Gaza and the so-called "West Bank" which will never agree to living under one government.
And the fact is, the ONLY country they were promised was the original Arab-Palestinian State, which is most of what is modern day Jordan. |

Transjordan was established as a Mandate in 1922 and as an independent country in 1946 named Jordan. As to the Partition Plan anyone can google up a map; 55% of the territory of Mandate Palestine went to the jewish Agency; the other 45% to the Palestinians who would then normally have held a plebiscite to determine if they wished to be independent or become a part of Jordan. Unfortunately within two hours of the end of the Mandate the zionists invaded and attacked the Palestinian territory, having been heavily armed by the USSR,which originally proposed carving off half of Palestine to create a justforjews domain. Several Arabs states, all newly established, atempted to defend the Palestinian areas but they were no match for the lavishly funded and heavily armed Haganah which had now become the IDF. Only the Jordanian Army was able to defend much of the WB under the leadership of the brilliant John Glubb Pasha. By 1949 the 55% the jews had agreed to was 78.5% and by 1967 the remaining 22.5% of Mandate Palestine was and remains under hostile occupation by the zionists. Legally the zionists have no claim to anything but the Partition PLan borders the jewish agency agreed to on Nov. 29,1947 since the current zionist regime is the legal successor to the jewish agency and bound by it's committments. |

The two states were to be a Jewish state (which is now known as Israel) and a Arab state, which currently retains the name of Palestine, the original name of that area of land prior to division. While Israel has received recognition in the UN as an independent nation, Palestine has not been recognized as a nation.
The word state in this case is used to define the two divisions that were supposed to be created with in Palestine. It does not really mean two independent nations were to be created. |

Palestinians had lived in Palestine for generations. Built homes, families and livelyhoods on that land. They had long sought independance and Britain promised full independance and all of Palestine in return for help during WW1.
The European Jews were.....European. Never set foot in Palestine themselves.
Who had the greater claim to the land? |

It was technically 3 states: Israel, Palestine, and Jordan. The UN Partition Plan was an update of the British Mandate, which included all three of these areas as Trans-Jordan. Jordan, however, didn't like this, and backed the Palestinians in the 1948 War. |

NOT pakistan, as that is next to india, no where near the middle east. anyway the land was split into israel and palestine, palestine its self is split into the west bank and gaza. originally the whole place was called palestine, until the end of ww2 |

The partition plan did not name the countries, only called them "Jewish state" and "Arab state".
When Israel declared independence, it named itself "Israel".
Had an Arab state been created at 1947-8 I doubt it would have been named "Palestine", because the Arabs did not view themselves as "Palestinians" at that time. "East Jordan" would have been even more likely. |

Israel and Jordan became a country under the partition Palestine was proposed to became a country as well under the partition plan but the representives of the Arab population of the BMP rejected the proposal and Palestine remained a defacto state. I forget the exact reason why the Arab delegates did that. |
