Hey Nico,
Congrats on having a baby boy. I really like the names Ruan, Stephan, and Andries. I had my newborn son born like almost two weeks ago. Really wanted a Afrikaans name for him but couldn't keep it because my wife is Aussie and her parents cant pronounce the names so we kept an English name. His name is Abraham Benjamin Rhodes. Anyways good luck with the naming and take care.

My een ouma is Anna, die ander is Maria, hulle het die twee bymekaar gesit en by Anria uitgekom.
My Afrikaans juffrou se seun was Luhard, want haar man se pa was Lukas en haar pa was Gerhard.
Dit sal albei jul vaders baie trots maak as hul kleinseun n deel van hul naam het.

Stay clear of names that can become teasers, like Albie (for albino if the child has blond hair) and combinations of initials like Antonie Willem Botha = AWB. The name Rueben means carrots or vegetable roots in German. I prefer Zander, Ruan and Johan.
Also nice is using the maiden name of the mother. My niece is called Nel, and she has named her boy Jordan.

I like Zander as it is a name I have already picked out myself for a boy should I have one in the future. However I was going to spell it with an X (Xander) instead just to be a little different.

Otherwise I like Rueben after my grandpa, but I'm sure you couldn't care less about my grandpa's name :P

Just so you know the name Zander is English and a shortened version of Alexander.Call your son after yourself. Nicolaas is a nice name and translates easily across other languages which may be a must considering what the ANC are doing to your language and culture.
