whites dont suffer racism in Kenya. I dont think you can compare Kenya to Zimbabwe or even South Africa. The reason is, when the British came and colonized Kenya, they didnt make us second class citizens. Besides stealing our land, they really didnt do much damage. They westernized most Kenyans and the British had good relations with Kenya in comparison to other African countries and their colonizers. My grandfather and grandmum took the train in the late 1950s and went to zimbabwe. My grandfather booked a first class ticket for him and my grandmum but on their way back to Kenya from Zimbabwe they were denied first class. Even though they paid for it, the zimbabwe government back then only allowed whites and Indians in first and second class. So they were downgraded to economy class. My grandfather told me that that was the first and only time he had experienced racism in his life. I think that is still why, blacks in south africa and zimbabwe have so much resentment for the whites beacuse they really suffered alot. But in Kenya during the colonial days, we didnt have much of that. We never had black townships, we never had black resturants, white restrurants. Our societies werent that segregated. But Kenyans still suffered under British rule (just not as much as sourthern Africa) So most kenyans dont have legit reasons to hate whites, except for the fact that "they stole our land" but most Kenyans I know dont really care. Also racism will be different in the various provinces of Kenya. People in the country sides, and the poor might have an infatuation for whites just because they are rarely around them. But the majority of Kenyans dont really care about race. And here in the coast, its more of the coastal natives agaisnt the upcountry immigrants. So we dont have time for racism. Infact we have a wave of immigrants coming to this area from South Africa and alot of them are whites who are escaping the crime in south africa. |

No. Just returned to London from Nairobi, staying in the home of a white Kenyan. no experience of racism on the scale of ZIM. the government is a large part of that. however, December 27Th has elections and we may see a change of direction if OMD come in. i speak from the experience of living also with the rural poor and have seen the tactics of OMD, not any different to western political parties. But the short answer t your question is NO.

Earlier posts have said it all, especially the one about Kenyans smiling. I have had so many Kenyan friends that we have nicknamed 'smilings', just because they cant seem to stop smiling. lol.
The only type of racism you get over here is that you whites are considered rich, no matter what. So you have people trying to con you, selling you overpriced stuff etc, for your money. But most 'mzungus' (white ppl) I know can bargain better than me, and get similar prices as me, so they must adapt somehow. Just, when buying something off the streets, never, ever take the first price they offer. You can get them to go down like 50%. So the only racism there is, is that you are considered very rich. |

No, white people are more of a curiousity, especially away from nairobi and the coast. I lived in the west and I didn't encounter any racism or anything like that. eveerybody is really friendly although I did get a lot of attention and people wondering what I was doing that. It was kind of like being a celebrity. The only time I felt like I was being looked down upon was when I was on the coast, but they are probably more used to idiot mzungu tourists so thats understandable. |

I lived there for a while, and everything was OK. You learn how to co-exist, and for the most part it worked. |

No- 99% of Kenyans are very happy people and very friendly towards white people. They are the most smiley people I have ever seen.
The only hassle you will get is for money, for example letters that they write to you claiming you owe them money for this and that... but they are scared of starting any trouble as they know the police will come down hard on them.
A lot of the locals I met said that if it wasn't for white people they would have no money... it was really sad to be honest- some of them used to say that they thought they were being punished for being evil in a past life, and that is why they were black and poor.
Its a very strange and superstitious mentality- especially out in the bush proper. It will put a lot of your problems in perspective! |
