Egypt did the Israeli without the USA help could not fight back the Egyptian massive attack. The USA forced the Egyptians to stop the war on one condition " Egypt Will get every inch of its occupied land after they stop the war by peace full negotiations." Egypt got every inch back so who won the war. From Egypt we learned that Palestinian must get back every inch of 67 territory occupied by Israel in the 67 war for lasting peace in the Middle East. |

ISRAEL WON 1967 ,THE PROOF IS THAT SHE OCCUPIED LANDS FROM 4 ARAB COUNTRIES
EGYPT WON 1973 ,THE PROOF IS ISRAEL GAVE BACK SINAI ,THE WHOLE SINAI
GOLDA MAEER SAID THE WAR IS A NIGHT MARE ,AND THEY WERE SCRAED AND WORRIED ABOUT ISRAEL EXISTANCE ITSELF.
BY LOGIC ,IF ISRAEL WON ,WOULD IT LOSE A LAND OR GIVE BACK A LAND WHICH IS BIGGER THAN ITSELF??
BY LOGIC,WOULD ISRAEL GIVE LANDS FOR A GIFT TO OTHER COUNTRIES?
IT OCCUPIES LANDS OF SYRIS ,PALESTINE AND NEVER GAVE THEM BACK ? EVEN FOR PEACE?
ONLY WHEN THEY LOSE WARS ,THEY WITHDRAW
LOOK AT LEBANON ,ISRAEL WITHDREW AFTER YEAR 2000 .AND THEY ALSO LOST THE LAST WAR IN SOUTHERN LEBANON. |

This question can't be answered the way you asked.
but to make it short: Egyptians won the battle, i mean they really spooked the hell out of the Israelis to the extent that Israelis seeked desperate help from the US. so military, yes.
But, Israel has won the war concerning the higher startegic goals, i mean, every war has its goals, Israel, despite lost the battles of 1973, but they won the war, by neutralising Egypt.
President Anwar Sadat did sign a treaty that was very costly to Egypt.
I know you don't like long answers. but i couldn't give you a "yes" or "no" answer on this..your statistics would be very inaccurate if you demand it that way..
anyway..good luck understanding what you need to understand. |

No doubt it's Egypt
They feel nervous when I tell them coz it's the naked truth.

I know there are alot of emotions here.
73 war was not easy, especially that Israel was considered a far stronger army than Egypt. But the surprise played a big role here. If we consider the outcome of the war then Egypt has certainly achieved they wanted and got the land back. However, not all the land was returned during the war, some parts was returned was continuous diplomatic negotiations.
In short Egypt won the war. For those who says Israel, how would you justify Israel signing a peace treaty in 78 with Egypt when while they keep land that was occupied by you before 73?
Edit:
Moneymaker, you got your ideas mixed I think. Israelis are not stupid to occupy that much territory and then give it back for peace. Look at your map, would Israel give a land as big as israel itself (even bigger) for peace?? maybe!
Edit
Ok Moneymaker, I understand the commonsense now. Israel won the war and decided to give the land back, same concept applied when Israel "won" the war against Hizbullah and sacked the Military Chief. It makes sense.
Whatever!! |

Both Israel and Egypt won because it was this war that allowed for their to be peace between them.
Syria on the other hand lost because it chose to grab a bit of land instead of pushing for peace. |

Israel. You may note that they still control the golan heights and that they controlled the sinai until they voluntarily gave it up years later. I'm old enough to remember hearing on the news how the israeli army was approaching cairo til the russians started making threats and the US convinced them to stop. |

The correct answer is "both" because it led to the Camp David Peace Accords.
The answer to the fighting is that Israel was winning the war at the end, but the United States and the Soviet Union through the United Nations brought the fight to a close with the possibility of military engagement between US and Soviet forces which neither side wanted to do since it meant the beginning of World War III.
At the end of the war neither side gained any significant territory, however the Egyptians had much heavier casualties and the Israelis had completely surround the Egyptian Third Army. Had the war not been stopped then it was very likely Israel force could have moved in and occupied Cairo forcing Sadat to sue for peace on Israel's terms. Neither the Soviet Union or the United States wanted that to become a reality.
Good Luck!!! |

Israel
Longer answer: By modern Arab victory logic, Egypt won because it is still standing despite Israel's efforts, and it gave the people a feeling that they had hurt the invincible Israel (the Hizbullah definition). However, Egypt lost more in the war, and would have been utterly crushed without international intervention, so I'm sticking to my answer.
EDIT: This thumbs down thing is ridiculous. Listen people, at wars end Israel still had the Sinai, while Egypt had nothing. The whole "Egypt won because it got the Sinai back" argument is ridiculous and historically innaccurate. Israel did not agree to return Sinai until 1978, a full 5 years later, and didn't actually withdraw until 1982. Anyone who thinks Egypt won should seriously consider his own definition of victory; Egypt launched a war to reclaim captured land, and at the end of the war that land was still under foreign control. The peace process began after that not because Israel felt threatened, but because the Arabs felt they had accomplished something and thus felt they had some pride. Israeli parliament had already voted in June 1967 to return the captured lands for peace. It was the Arab refusal to recognize Israel, and only this, that held up peace. The fact of the matter is that though the Egyptian military put together a successful campaign through the first 24-48 hours, they had suffered a clear defeat by the end of the war. If the UN had not intervened when it did, Egypt would be no more. By the ceasefire Israel had crossed to the Egyptian side of the Suez and isolated the Egyptian third army. Not exactly signs of victory.
Seriously, all the neccessary information is found on Wikipedia.
EDIT: Ok, I've asked a question where I've requested the Egyptian responders to explain their rationale. Haven't received many answers yet, so I hope anyone who checks this post will also answer mine. |

Israel, they took over the Golan (which they still control), and the entire Sinai (which they gave back to Egypt as part of the Camp David accords). If the Arab countries had won, there would be no Israel i.e. the intention was to "drive the Jews into the sea". |

Israel.
Despite initial Egyptian successes, by the end of the war Israel held more territory than it did at the start, with troops West of the Suez Canal and an open road to Cairo. Egypt's Third Army was cut off by Israeli forces and faced dying in the desert. Had the Great Powers not intervened, the Second and Third Armies would have been destroyed. For the first time, Egypt and Israel held direct negotiations to resolve issues of the Third Army and POWs--previously no Arab nation would sit face-to-face with Israelis.
Egypt's "victory" was internal and psychological. For once Egypt had fought Israel without fleeing headlong for their lives or leaving their boots in the sand. That's setting the bar pretty low. |

Israel AND I HAVE STATISTICS JUST TAKE THE TIME (2 min) TO READ THEM IT WILL HELP YOU. Im not an Egyptian, Syrian, or an Israeli, so I would not be baised any way, Im a history buff thats all, and the victory was Israel's, its a fact. The story? Syria and Egypt (supported by armed forces of Iraq) attacked Oct.6, 1973 on Yom Kippur, a Jewish holiday (day of atonement). The entire war lasted only 20 days. Initially the attack seemed successful, and it looked for a period of around 48 hours that the Arabs might win. However, on day 2 of the war, the Syrians had been pushed back towards the Golan heights. Week 2- Syrians were pushed entirely over the border. The Israelis advanced towards the Bar-Lev line and cut the retreating Egyptian Army in half. The Egyptian Third Army was surrounded and cut off from reinforcements. This happened on Oct. 26. The UN stepped in and ended the war with a cease-fire at the request of the Egyptians to avoid another humiliating failure at the hands of the Israelis. Had the war continued, the Israelis would have turned the tables and overrun the Egyptians totally, pushing deep into Egyptian territory and possibly even making an assault ( at least aerial) on Cairo, In this war, military doctrine clearly states that Israel was the victor. Outnumbered 3:1 in terms of men and 2:1 in terms of equipment, Israel nevertheless acheived 4 times as many kills than the Arabs in terms of aircraft and tanks Israeli losses stand at around 2,400 dead, Arab losses at close to 15,000 dead. 102 Israeli planes were shot down, 450 Arab planes were shot down. Israel lost 600 tanks, the Arabs lost 2,300 tanks. Though considered at least in the first few days as Israel's toughest war, Israel ultimately was the victor in this Arab-Israeli war. While many in the Arab world consider 73' a victory for the Arab cause, the Western world, military doctrine, statistics, and the history books acknowledge Israel as the victor of the 1973 war. |

There is nothing to argue about
here is a simple map http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/da/Jom_kippur_war.jpg
What is in red is what was held by the Egyptian Army, and what is in green is what was held by the Israelis.
Once you take a look at it, you will understand everything yourself, and this question will never trouble you again.
Apparently some Egyptians are really hurt by their military losses if they try to convince themselves of a victory they never achieved.
Egyptians, get over it! Its not like Israelis are pointing fingers and screaming "losers".
shalfat, Israelis never wanted all that land to begin with.
They wanted that land to negotiate peace with Arabs, and they achieved what they wanted.
Edit: What else do you think they gave it for? I mean you have to be delusional to think that they gave it back out of fear. |
