Who in your opinion is the worst and most oppressive tyrant in history?

My top 5 would be:
1) Vladimir Lenin and Mao Zedong tied - Primarily due to the millions of deaths they inflicted on their respective homelands through the implementation of communism and the resultant violent revolutions that took place as well as remembering the millions that starved largely due to communist practises that adversly affected farming and agriculture
2) Adolf Hitler
3) Shaka Zulu - For the vile and savage nature of atrocities committed by him during his reign of mass genocide as well as bearing the fact that he routinely murdered and tortured his own wives who became preganant so as not to allow for an heir to his thrown as well as acts of canabalism and violent torture openly practised by him in the formation of the Zulu Kingdom.
4) Vladamir the Impaler
5) Pol Pot
Others to consider could be Nero, Bloody Mary, King John, Idi Amin, Robert Mugabe, Qaddaffi, Ivan the Terrible, Sadam Hussein....
Who would make your list and can you add to names I have provided?
Additional Details

George W. Bush is hardly a tyrant by any stretch of the imagination and one should remember that he is a democratically elected leader, how many millions of death does he bear full responsibility for?

Field Marshall Idi Amin
How dare you put others above me on the list. I was the bossman and you have to be hard to be the boss.

Coral S
Sadam, Mugabe, Bush and Idi Amin.

Reb Da Rebel

Hitler and Robert Mugabe - you'd swear Robert was a milder reincarnation of Hitler.

I certainly agree with everyone on your list but I would like to add one. Castro. While I'm supposing that he hasn't committed atrocities such as those already mentioned, his reign of terror is still going on. How many people have died trying to escape Cuba and get to the US. Yes, I would put him on the list.

Darth Vader
Good grief, everybody seem to forget Stalin and his gulags.

****Add***
When Stalin was laying and dying, his doctors and aids were to scared to go into the room to wake him although he was late for a meeting. They were too scared that they might anger him by disturbing him. It says a lot when even your close associates and aides are this scared of you.

Snorkie
Well ...........you really have a list of "Heavy" tyrants, I can't add another one. Didn't know Shaka Zulu was so bad, shows you how little I know, but I have read that book "china shakes the world" by James Kynge and my vote will go for Chairman Mao, he let 30 million of his own people, people that trusted and supported him starve to death. Said china has anyway too many mouths to feed. 30 million out of 1.3 billion is just a few.....That is atrocious.

Bull, I put everybody in your list as amended. Bush might have been wrong to invade Iraq, but he certainly is not a tyrant...^^(((<O>)))^^

De La Rey
Hopefully in a couple of years when you ask that same question we can not include the name of Zuma !

eaglecpo
Stalin. Most of the others actually believed in improving their country. They were blinded by the power and to their methods. Stalin simply wanted power and did not care who died or suffered so he can remain in power. His only pride in Russia was his Russia, not Lenin's or the people's. What really differentiated him from Hitler is Hitler killed for racial hatred, Stalin did not hate or love the millions he killed, he just killed due to feeling threatened. Bush is not a tyrant. Even though we disagree with his decisions he is still limited in his power as shown by Supreme Court and Congressional actions. To refer to our US leader as a tyrant is insulting to our political system.

Sadam Hussein was okay just the American press that colored him black
F W deKlerk he feck our country and us right through the ears

?
I would go for the most cunning oppressive tyrant........it's only that he has the history on his side......and seem to be less devlish than others....... otherwise he beats everyone hands down...his name is George W Bush......

I would vote for George Bush!

edit*** What do you call the illegal war in Iraq? Millions might not have died now but how many will die from the side effects of chemical warfare. They are still using them today. Just look at Japan, Hiroshima. More than 60 years later and they still have major birth defects and other medical problems . Bush hasn't used atomic weapons but at that time they didn't know that there would be such bad side effects. Only years later did they find out. Nobody knows what the effects are of these chemical weapons used. Not only on the future population but also on the environment.

Ha ha ha. Firstly, Lenin was part of the Russian Revolution against the evil oppression of the Tsarists and the Russian bourgeoisie that had so much contempt for their own people that they spoke French rather than Russian as a first language. The Russian peasants lived in slavery and serfdom well after the slaves in the US were freed, people fail to note this often. Anyway, Lenin did not really live long enough to become what Stalin did. Stalin was without doubt a vicious tyrant but then what he did had little to do with genuine Communism.

As for Fidel Castro, well how come you didn't answer any of my Cuban questions? I am not saying Castro is a saint but he is no evil tyrant and thanks to him and Commandante Che Guevara the people of Cuba were saved from being prostituted by the Washington Mob.

Mao Zedong was a tyrant, but nothing more than the Red Emperor, again, if you knew anything about Communism you would see that what you have in most so-called communist countries is far from any kind of Communism at all. True Communism resembles more like what Jesus preached. As for the others well,

Pol Pot was sadistically evil. Batista in Cuba was awful
Idi Amin, Bokassa and Mugabe were/are rotten through and through

It is unfair to place Shaka Zulu on the list as it is to place Vlad the Impaler, they were heroes to some in a different time and culture, we cannot judge them by modern standards. King John, despite being villified in the romances of Robin Hood was actually the King who finally agreed to sign Magna Carta, the basis of English "democracy", albeit in an embryonic form. Blood Mary, again, different times and different places. Nero, well you might have opted for Caligula or Tiberius, Nero was hated by the patricians more than by the plebs and so much of what we know of him is one-sided and from an historical point of view, highly dubious.

Saddam Hussain was a badman but no worse than many other leaders in the Arab world, he just fell foul of his old buddies in Washington. Colonel Qaddaffi is not such a bad man as Arab leaders go and if you understood one iota of the history of Libya you would maybe understand his attitude to the West and especially America.

You fail to put the following on your list,
General Pinochet former US backed fascist dictator of Chile.
Alfredo Stroessner of Paraguay (American backed dictator)
General Franco of Spain (another fascist)
Mussolini (although more comical than tyrannical he is a bit of an enigma historically)
Yitzhak Shamir, Israeli prime minister 1983-1984 and 1986-1992.and ex-terrorist member of the Stern gang.
Argentine dictators Leopoldo Galtieri and Roberto Viola. The military dictatorship (1976-1983) had its roots in the U.S.-financed School of the Americas,

THE WORST OF ALL HAS TO BE ADOLPH HITLER

jokerman
Blair must be in the list
