The tradition here in the UK is to have them with lemon and sugar.

However, when I was in Estonia a couple of years ago, I came across a lovely recipe for savoury pancakes and here it is.

Poach salmon while cooking the pancakes, when the salmon is cooked, place on the pancake, cover with cream of horseradish sauce, then wrap the pancake around the salmon. Serve with vegetables of your choice or a salad.

When I first tried this, I was surprised how much the horseradish complimented the salmon.

Also, why wait for Shrove Tuesday to have pancakes???? We have 'em all year round!!!!!!!!!

I've had 4.5 :)

Well I wasn't until I saw your question, now I'm craving them like mad! I like mine traditional just real butter and maple syrup.

Yes we are having them with genuine Canadian Maple syrup. Dont know what we are doing tomorrow - its Shefffield Wednesday.

JH - Correction. The UK is not Anglican - the English are.

Shrove Tuesday is an event on the Roman Catholic Church calendar.
It does not feature in other Christian denominations - except in a minor way in the Anglican Church.

The vast majority of SA Christians belong to churches heavily influenced by Calvinism - which generally reject all events and practices that are not specifically prescribed in the Bible.
(The term they used to use for such matters was "Popery" or "Popish practices" but that is usually considered derogatory these days.)

So except for the minority of Catholics and some "hardcore" Anglicans, Shrove Tuesday means nothing to most South Africans.

"Mardi Gras" is generally thought of as a lekker wild carnival that happens in some foreign countries but I'd put money on less than 1 in 100 South Africans knowing anything about its origin.

"Pancake Day" simply means its raining.
