Hatshepsut. She was the ruler of Egypt during the New Kingdom, in the 18th dynasty (same dynasty as Nefertiti, but years earlier). When her husband died, she became the regent king for her husband's young son Thutmose, who was born of another wife. She ruled a long time and was a successful ruler, although a little power hungry. She didn't want to give Thutmose his throne when he came of age, but he took it from her and set to work cutting her name out, everywhere it appeared in the country. He missed a lot, of course, which is why we know about her today.

During the time when she ruled, she dressed like a man, even going so far as to wear a fake beard. Of course, male Pharaohs wore fake beards, too, so it wasn't that strange. She wasn't trying to hide her gender. She just wanted to look like a traditional pharoah.

The most famous women pharaos in Ancient Egypt are
Hatshepsut from the 18th dynasty who ruled from 1472-1458 BC
Nefertiti form the 18th Dynasty co ruled with her Husband Akhenaton from 1353-1336 BC (it is though that she briefly ruled Egypt After the Death of Akhenaton under the name of Smenkhkare.
Cleopatra th VII of the Ptolemic era Became ruled Egypt from 51 to 30 BC

But there are many earlier queens less known who ruled Egypt as regent for their Sons and Husbands' kings as early as the first Dynasty 3000 BC. According to the inscriptions in the tomb of Queen Meryt-Neith Wife of Djet, Mother of Den. Her tomb is with the tombs of other First Dynasty Pharaohs, she was buried with honors usually used for kings including a boat to travel to the next world, and her name is found on a seal with the names of other First Dynasty Pharaohs. But on that seal, her symbol is that of a King's Mother and the other names have the sign of Horus, for a Pharaoh. So perhaps she was a regent, but the evidence is not clear

This honour would have to go to Queen Khentkaues I of the 5th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom.
.Khentkaues I is the owner of a huge and impressive tomb at Giza. It is neither a conventional mastaba or a pyramid. More importantly she is depicted wearing the Pharaonic beard and the uraeus.
Both these pieces of royal regalia were always reserved to only be worn by a reigning Pharaoh.
Queen Hatshepsut of the 18th Dynasty is the only other female Pharaoh known to have adopted the false beard traditionally worn by all Pharaohs.
This tradition remained unchanged throughout all Dynasty's.
Khentkaues I was also the mother of two reigning Pharaohs. She also ruled as acting regent for one,her eldest son who became Pharaoh Sahure.
Her titles included "Duel King and Mother of a Duel King" This is in reference to Neferirkare I who succeeded to the throne after his brother.

There are three in the remote history of Egypt. The first acting Queen in ancient Egypt is from the Old Kingdom, the fifth dynasty. Her name is Knetkaus. This is maybe surprising to many. Then in the New Kingdom there is Hatsheput of the eighteenth dynasty who ruled 22 years as active Queen who sent an expedition to Africa with the intention of bringing back much information about the Red sea and Africa. It was a peaceful expedition that was received well by the Africans above all the Somalis. The expedition described the marine life at the red sea and left drawings of all kinds of fish found at the red sea. They brought back with them new herbs, spices and incence. They described what animals and plants they found. Also the Queen of Somalia( Punt) was depicted as sick of elephantysis.
Then in the Greek era Cleopatra was Queen of Egypt, she is world famous.

Agree with the posters who've answered and given info on Hatsheput.

What was particularly fascinating and brave about this woman-Pharoah is that she was grooming her only-daughter to follow in her royal footsteps. This matrilineal idea was unheard of. None of this came to fruition though- Hatsheput died a long, arduous death - in her approximate late 40s of a staph infection from a pulled-tooth that was absessed.

And, to this day, no one knows exactly what happened to her princess daughter(who may have been fathered by her tutor who was her mother's architect and confidant - a commoner). Many archeologists that specialize in this time of Egypt think the princess was killed sometime after her mother and potential father died, to be removed as a political threat.

Not too long ago, there was an excellent program on Hatsheput(History or Discovery channel in the U.S., I believe), with updated evidence, using new dna technology and fresh points of view of some of the hidden and arcane hierogyphs that shed light on the Queen-commoner relationship. It was fascinating!
