They're a low quality portion of meat full of saturated fat. Meat is not favored in an optimal diet, anyway. They are on low quality bread, stripped of its nutrients. None of the veggies on them are very good for you. The ketchup and bun are sweetened. Cheese is more saturated fat. Don't forget the sodium.
The whole is somewhat taxing on the digestion. They promote the major diseases of civilization - heart disease and cancer. They dehydrate you and make your body more acidic. They weaken your immune system.
If you eat them, do so in moderation. If you skydive a lot and ride motorcycles, the burgers won't kill you.
Ginger is right when she says frying is bad. |

unless you homemake them (and you know what goes into them) then ya. but we all know that the majority of hamburgers are from fastfood places. |

A well made hamburger can be very healthy for you. It's the fast food sort you have to be weary of.
The meat is usually low grade and fatty, nuked to death in cholesterol thickened oil. The vegetables are so limp you suspect them of being re used, and the buns can be stale. Cheese is often the processed, yucky stuff, full of colorants and flavorants.
It's sad though because the general consensus is the more unhealthy they are for you, the better they taste! |

Grilled hamburgers are not that unhealthy. ??????? |

That is just propaganda spread by the fish ´n chips people to get more customers. |

Well take out burgers have processed meat and cheese ,in them the buns are full of sugar and all the sauce you get on it would be full of preservatives...Home made can be pretty balanced ,by using a pure beef patty not mixed in breadcrumbs..Wholemeal bread some salad ..Home made is best at least you know what is going into it... |

I always wanted to know the answer to this. To me it's healthy as you say... Why would it be unhealthy with all thats in it?! |

Haha, yes, and if you're a man and you put some tomato sauce on it your chances of prostrate cancer will not be as high (because of the sauce). Just a thought... =) |

Seems fair enough, but the fast food variety is loaded with grease and extra calories - not to mention that side of fries which are none to good for you. If you really want a burger, make it at home, they are the healthiest variety.
That being said, obviously moderation is the key. |

All depends upon who makes them and with what ingredients as well. Homemade are better than any fast food most of the time. |

Wow, what a good question. I absolutely love hamburgers!
Yes, I hear what you say! Bread, salad and meat! I think it is the chips (fries) that is unhealthy in the "junk food" category!
Who wants to join me at Wimpy for a avo and bacon burger!? |

I never met a vegetarian that looked normal. Hamburgers are good for you and so is any other meat product. |

Mr T-Bone you haven't met me......What do mean vegetarians are not normal.....
Back to the Q - Yip you got a good point ,dont forget the starch ang fibre and roughage from the buns , sesame seed are also good....
Steers make a mean veggie burgers , friends of mine who also eat meat have tasted them and agree... |

When you buy them, they're not that healthy, because of the fatty patty, loads of sauce, lost piece of tomato etc. But if you make them yourself, it is quite balanced. With fresh tomato, lettuce and gherkins, 100% beef patty, onions, bun and not-so-much-sauce. |

I would also think that they are healthy seeing that they have vegetables (vitamins), meat (protein & fats), bun (carbohydrates). But everything that taken in excess isn't good for you. |

"Unhealthy" hamburgers is a propaganda tool from the Bush administration to drop the consumption rate of everyday delights in order to keep dietitians busy during the week.
I love them. Agree with you 100% |

hamburgers can be healthy but they use alot of oil. |

The unhealthy aspect is that lots of people fry them. If you use cheap meat then it has more fat. Then add cheese, mayo and a white bun and the calories add up. You can certainly make it healthy. |

Because of all the junk they are served with. Everything around the burger including the patty is either drenched in fat or sugar. Fat and sugar being combination which has been proven to be highly addictive and highly unhealthy in excess. |

hamburgers are not that bad for you and your right, they have green stuff on them to. just don't have the cheese. |

It depends on the grade of meat. Use lean beef and bake them instead of frying them in grease. Omit the cheese and the ketchup and you'll have a healthy hamburger. |
