All I can say is that my best friend has a SA accent and it never bothered me or anyone else I know who knows her. BUT I do understand what you're saying as she does get the odd derogitory comment from her work collegues, even her boss told her to speak "properly" once!!! Baring in mind we live in Sunderland!!! Not all but the majority of of people across Britain with there different dialect can't speak "proper" English!!!! |

I'm british and i think the south african accent is lovely.
I am from the north west of england , and everybody says we sound common, but scouse, mancs and my accent are all totally different.
Mine is more like chorley/preston and i am very proud of it and everybody should feel the same about their own accents regard were you come from. |

Maybe it's because there are so many South Africans in the UK who are hard working and good at their jobs and the Brits don't like this so they critisise the SA accent! And the fact that the South Africans can go back to their beautiful country anytime and the Brits are stuck in their world or drudgery and foul weather |

I do not share your experience. Most people are very complimentary about it - and I do have a strong accent!
Maybe it is your attitude, MJ! :-)
Cool it Boet. |

I quite like it but alot of people have difficulty understanding it.
The same goes for my regional accent (Geordie) and others such as scouse, brummie etc
Just ignore people who are rude it's just ignorance. |

I like the South African accent, it's very easy on the ears. I have worked with a lot of people from South Africa and have never had a problem understanding them. :-) I find a very strong Geordie accent more difficult to understand (but still not unpleasant to listen to). |

I have to say, being an SA in London, that I have often had people recognize my accent but never say they dislike it or be rude about it. Is yours perhaps an Afrikaans based one and so slightly more guttural? |

It's not only the British that don't like the South African accent.
I'm Australian & I can't stand it - too guttaral & harsh.
Whereas I like the sound of most British accents ---- maybe not too keen on the Irish though! |

Because they know that the south african can work and work hard and because of this companies will much rather appoint a south african than a British
South africans is not only taking over their country but their work as well and we beat them at rugby as well |

I think it might just be your accent that the brits dont like? I like most brittish accents and often find my self attracted to a guy with an accent? Wonder why?
My favourite though is the Irish mmmm |
|

Meeeee!

Sorry but I have to say that the South African accent is extremely annoying - it's up there with the Birmingham & strong Welsh accents.
Why do you keep asking loads of SA questions in the UK area of YA? (Unless I'm confusing you with someone else.) Surely you'd get better reponses in the SA section? (I don't mean for this questions but for your other ones) |
