There is no one 'reason' for anti semitism. It's a bit like asking: why do women in so many cultures and countries get raped; is there a common thread?

Applying the Litmus Test to the Economic Theory

If we use the Economic Theory to explain the phenomenon of anti-Semitism, then anti-Semitism becomes purely a class struggle: the poor versus the rich, the less fortunate versus those with unlimited financial and organizational backing.

How can we test this explanation?

First, consider universal attitudes towards the rich. Have anti-Semites persecuted wealthy non-Jews as well?

As soon as the persecution is in any way limited to Jews it is no longer based upon economics, because at no time in history were Jews the only wealthy people. As soon as the hater decides to single out wealthy Jews and ignore wealthy non-Jews, economics no longer can be the cause for his hatred.

Second, if we remove the element of wealth and power from the Jews, does the anti-Semitism vanish?

The Jews who lived in the shtetels of Poland and Russia between the seventeenth and the twentieth centuries were poor and powerless, utterly lacking any form of influence whatsoever. Yet they were hated. Often they were persecuted and subjected to unspeakable torments. On many occasions entire villages were ransacked and their Jewish inhabitants massacred in cold blood. Under those circumstances, anti-Semitism did not distinguish between rich and poor, between strong and weak, between powerful and powerless.

Non-Jewish Americans were presented with eighteen unfavorable statements about Jews, and asked whether they believed any of them. For our test case we need to find an era in history when Jews collectively rejected their "choseness" and were assimilated by their host nation. The choice is obvious – Germany at the turn of the century.

Late in the nineteenth century, the Jews living in Germany and Austria denied that they were in any way "chosen." In fact, they believed that the non-Jews among whom they lived were the true chosen people. "Berlin is our Jerusalem!" they loudly proclaimed. Gentile society was their social environment of choice, and Germany was their beloved motherland.

Did anti-Semitism disappear? Well, we all know the answer to that question.

Money, etc. is an excuse. Otherwise other groups who are successful monetarily would be just as hated.

In fact, most reasons given are excuses, because they could easily apply to other groups who are not universally the target of hatred.

So what is the reason? I'm not sure I agree completely with Dennis Prager's assertions, but it is interesting reading.

It's also interesting to ask why do 4 billion (Christians and Muslims) people base their religious ideals on the God of Abraham, yet hate the people who first brought word of that God out of the desert?

because since the beggining of time it has been far easier to blame all your problems and failings on a single group than it has been to take a long hard look and take responsibility.

first jews were hated because we were differant, so we assimilated.
then we were hated because we were too much like everyone else.

Christianity and Islam both originally tried to establish their own legitimacy by linking themselves to Judaism, but by Jewish doctrine both Christianity and Islam are false religions. By their very existence, Jews make some Christians and Muslims uncomfortable, because if Jews exist who have not converted to Christianity or Islam (and if millions of Jews are willing to be tortured and murdered rather than convert to Christianity or Islam), that is pretty strong evidence that Christianity and Islam are not only false, but false enough to die over. If Christianity and Islam had NOT wedded themselves to Judaism through the Torah, they wouldn't have anything to worry about. But they did, so now every Jew, living or dead, is a reminder that they are worshiping a false Messiah and a false Prophet, respectively. By their own scripture, the worshippers of false Messiahs or Prophets are Hellbound, so the existence of Judaism counter-indicates their own Salvation.

There are many reasons for other people to hate Jews.
1. Jews were minority in all countries that you listed, and they were often robbed by majority.Criminal never would like his victim. One day victim may testify in the court.
2. For the last 2000 years Jews had advantage over other religious groups. Paul Jonson in his book "History of Jews" says that 2,000 years ago Jews were the only people of 100% literacy. Now ask you grandfather, when he came down from the tree, and you will hate Jews so much...

I don't know why the Germans, Poles, and Russians hated the Jews, but my guess would be simply racism. The same way whites hated blacks...there was no reason, it just was because they were "different".

As for Arabs, as someone stated in their answer, Arabs never hated the Jews, if anything, during the Christian Crusades and the infamous holocaust, Palestinians welcomed many Jews into Palestine in order to live in a place where they would be safe. It wasn't until these Jews decided to overstay their welcome and take the Palestinian land as their own that Arabs felt hate towards the people who were now putting them through what they tried to save these people from. Note, they don't hate them for their religious background, they hate them for their horrific actions.

So in conclusion, some Jews, not all, specifically Israelis, have committed many unthinkable crimes that makes Palestinians regret lending a helping hand. Take the recent Gaza incident. I myself know someone who lost two young brothers murdered by Israelis then...How can you love someone who kills your children? And for what? So that they can forcefully claim a country that does not belong to them since they have no where else to go that they can claim their own. Palestinians showed them they are weak when they let them in, and God knows they won't get out now....or your dead.

Sara,please,don`t make a laughing stock out of yourself.Palestine in the 7th century was part of the Christian Byzantine Empire.No “arab troops “could migrate to Palestine,simply because the troops of Byzantine would not let them in.So,when Muslims conquered Palestine (and Jerusalem),the inhabitants spoke whatever you wish-except Arabic.And the inhabitants of Palestine were whatever you want-except Arabs.

My dear Sara,”original Canaan settlers” did not speak Aramaic.They spoke their own language-Canaanite. The original Canaanites were assimilated by Hebrews,and their language together with their culture very quickly became extinct .Aramaic became the language of this region many centuries later.
If the Ancient Philistines or Canaanites heard how you,an Arab who would not be able to read a word in Canaanite or Ancient Philistine language(which is not even semitic language),start with important air to tell how you are ”the native Canaan settler”("native settler",Sara, is an oxymoron),they would jump out of their graves and shout on you “A Liar”.

My dear Freddy, I know that racism is going strong among large groups of people, but please do not mix antisemitism with any other kind of racism.
OK, I know that the vast majority of our Jewish friends have dark characteristics (Black hair, olive skin, dark small eyes e.t.c.) but this is a special kind of racism.
These people use all of their money power to convince the rest of the world that they are "special". These people have the audacity to compare themselves with the Afro-American people that had endured slavery and torture for aeons, until the 1950's.
