Why can't women drive in saudi arabia?

It is because driving is a man's job, also women are not allowed to show their faces in public so how could they drive with face covered? They are expected to stay at home and tend to their household works and take care of the child although some are now allowed to teach young children and older girls, some are working in hospital and offices which caters to women's needs.

I'm so sick of this question.

Saudi Dude Is Freakin' Sweet

this Q made me sick :(

I have no idea. I'm Iranian and it makes no sense to me, why are they allowed to work if they can't drive? They can even be doctors and save lives, but they are not allowed to drive. Iranian girls like me have much more freedom then them. Some of them can't even see, their eyes are covered! Here, in Iran, we enjoy being able to see where we are going and everything, but hey, that's just us.

Because in Saudi Arabia, men are superior to women, almost to the point that women are kept as virtual slaves.

I agree with "Roz" a hundred percent.
Thanks "Roz".

For the same reason that you cannot have a Saudi woman. That is just the way it is.

relax guys - the man might actually want some information.
The issue here is the saudi laws of segregation. It has nothing to do with subjugating women. The laws are in place, in theory, to protect women - from the evil eye of the Saudi males I suppose!
Anyway the law is the law and who are we, the expats and hence outsiders, to question it? the fact is that if women were to drive who would attend to them if they had a flat tyre or had an accident?
There is whole logistics issue involved where they would have to train women driving instructors, women police and women mechanics. So hence there is a whole big organisational issue. Hence I suspect the delay in allowing women to drive.

It's more about the society than about religion.
The social situation in Saudi Arabia doesn't help. I won't get in details so some people may not feel offended. You know what, most of Saudi guys are CRAZIES.

its these weird fanatical people..
they have pressured the government into thinking of their strange extreme viewpoints..
its not culture.. you ask any saudi man and he is willing to let his female relatives drive..
Everyone I talk to is willing to let women drive..
I think these weird pervy extremist men think or dont trust their women.. God save these women...
maybe they think their wives will get in a car and drive to who knows where and do who knows what..
my take is this.. if those women are of the sort that will get up to no good, they will do it whether they can drive or not.. whose stopping them from getting into a taxi and getting to the "point" place of their ill doing...
Good women will always be good women.. Look at Bahrain.. (30min from Khobar saudiarabia).. the women there are fine, they are just as chaste as Saudi women, they drive.. but there are no more instances of fornication or such there than there is here in Saudi.. In fact I think people are much more relaxed there in Bahrain..
These extreme viewpoints need to stop...
I would much rather drive my own daughter to her school than allow her to get in a car with some pervy foreigner man that I dont know what his background is.. He might be on death row for rape from his country, and ran over here to find work.. just waiting for the opportune moment to do a crime again..

In Saudi it is the law that dictated this , not really the society because I've seen with my own eyes Saudi women driving though illegally in Saudi Arabia as far back as the 80's. But they can't go to a mjor city or main highway or the police will stop them and issue them a ticket for driving without a license (duh!), then they will call a male from the family to come and pick up the woman and take her home . It does not make sense to me. And I think most Saudis agree, because whenever I see Saudis living outside their country their woman get driver licenses.
This ban is of course a new thing and not part of Islamic teachings or such. Just , excuse me if I may say, a stupid misinterpretation by some uneducated close-minded sheiks. And what is worse they use Islam as a scape goat to justify this. They claim it is for the good of the society , if so, why is the restriction on females only, why not place a similar thing on young men who keep ogling and throwing numbers on every non-saudi woman they see.
Plus when a Saudi woman is not allowed to drive , she or her family will have to hire a driver (who is usually a foreign male), because the husband is either at work or she is not married yet. So in Islamic terms this is an excuse worse than the offense (as they claim to cut suspicions or whatever), because she is now at the mercy of this foreign guy, and even if he is a honest person , it is still a financial load and waste of money that could have gone to bettering the family situation specially if they were poor. Plus this "cutting suspicions" legal theory of these sheiks completely contradicts another more important Islamic Sharia of innocence of suspect until proving of suspicion (aka innocent until proven guilty). Now what kind of society based its laws on exceptions and suspicions, this law is not valid even Islamically speaking.
I think I recently read about a Saudi woman piloting an airplane , so I can't understand why is it OK for them based on their twisted theory , to let it be OK a woman pilot an aircraft full of "unrelated male" passengers, and it is not OK for her to drive her own car in a PRIVATE even. At least leave it to each family to decide on their own and not interfere in people's personal lives.

Because it's the custom and the law.

Beyond that, it's none of your ***ing business!!

Why is your first question on Y!A such a rude, insensitive one? It's obvious that your intention is not to find out information, but to be a trouble-maker.

This is not a site intended for being nasty to each other.
