Hi Res, Sunny says hello. It also amazes me. In December on the beech where I live people just throw or rather drop plastic bottles and other rubbish as they walk. What I find more disturbing is when you see a parent do this in front of a child. It got so bad at Christmas that I began picking up the rubbish and then saying "excuse me you dropped something". Most of the time people were too embarrassed to say anything. I did get the odd comment mainly from wealthy people, as they climed into there "100 ltr" !!!!!! Range Rover with GP written all over it.
We need a on-the-spot fine of R20 and wardens who are authorised to collect this. |

You are not alone, the feeling is mutual, i even cringe when cigarette butts are being thrown out the window, i have nothing against smokers as such, but to me that is a form of littering!
It all has to do with being lazy and ignorant.
They should invent a "stompie catcher" for cars, i will feel better. |

because they are lazy, people these days pretend to care about the environment and their carbon footprint gets bigger and bigger because they do not practice what they preach they are too lazy to throw something in the bin, sure why walk to a bin when there is a ground right beneath your feet, its unfortunate that this is happening but people are lazy |

Its true people contribute a great deal in creating slums.
But we have to be hornest now its not that it is not been taught at school.
If you are a South African I am sure when you were at school the Principal did say something about litter in assembly.
The problem is the parents side it is not being enforced by the parents in fact they litter too.
We have go to change mindsets people don't see it as something important.
Now how do we change that. |

I'm glad to hear you dont litter. Dont worry you arnt the only one. It is just unfortunate that the choices of some ppl can really make a difference in the appearance of our society. I dont litter and my bf likes to pick it up sometimes. I agree it looks horrible, but some ppl do and no one ever tells someone they see to pick up their trash, ppl are just lazy and dont care enought to make the effort.
I hope more ppl are teaching their kids that it is important and makes you look good as a person

I believe it is the manner in which people are "brought up"
I remember a time when I threw a sweet paper out of my fathers car window - he stopped the car on a busy street - and made me walk back and pick it up, to this day I am SO conscious of littering...
I find it disgusting that people have so little respect for their surroundings, Take a walk on Strand Beach in Capetown and you will see exactly what I mean - Broken Beer Bottles, Crisp Packets etc. on the Beach were young people are playing, I end up taking Black Bags with me to the Beach and cleaning up after people and I don't even live there... I live in Gauteng - But I am so embarrassed that Overseas Visitors will see this filth and not want to return - and I guarantee you it is not the "Vaalies" who are doing this BUT the locals themselves - MAKES NO SENSE!! |

Yes I also hate it .... can't add anything to the other answerers they have said it all, but I agree with Sunny Helicopter we should all speak out and say..."excuse me I think you dropped this". I must say both my children had a Litter week or something like that last year at their respective schools which I thought was a great idea, I think it was country wide at the schools. It made a big impression on them and they also ventured out to parks and the older one to the beach picking up litter. Very good idea from the Dept of Education. |

My boyfriend tend to say every bit matters, even the smallest bit of paper you toss on the ground will give others the idea that its okay to do so. I cant understand why people do it, it says a lot about where you live and your home (well thats my opinion). Bins are created for a reason and should be used. Other than that, there are pockets and hand bags... (",) |

There is alot of reasons.I'm going to give some examples only. They litter either because they don't care about the environment or they're just too lazy.
And for an other reason they do it to oppress other people.
But I think you shouldn't worry because you're not the only one who execrates littering! |

Yes i agree - it is a shame the way everybody would just walk pass that piece of paper, not bothering to pick it up, and ironically the street is lined with bins, at a open field near our house there is broken bottles on the pavement, they just cut the grass and don't bother with the pavements grass or the bottles - sadly if you try to complain you end up talking to at least 5 different people and no one is able to help you or to tell you who can |

My experience has taught me that the majority of people don't do things because it's the right thing to do, but because they're being policed, No policing and the result speaks for itself.
Personally when i see someone litter, I pick it up, go tap the person on the shoulder and say in a loud voice so it catches everybody's attention: "Excuse me, you dropped something!" |

You answered your own ? they were not taught to pick up. Also my understanding that in Africa you always just threw your stuff on the ground which was fine until plastic showed up which never disintegrates. |

B/c people are too lazy to throw it in the trash.. The world would still be bad even if people did stop littering, you should be worried about more important things than just littering. |
