Hey there Farah,

OMG, i have had my fair shares of those stares, people in general and not just girls would stare at me as i walked by, usually checking me out, or trying to make eye contact, though i had never worn anything that is too eye catching or not modest.

At that time, i used to stare right back at them with an angry look of "go look somewhere else" and it used to work every time. lol i am scary huh.

Bu the thing is i do have friends that do that and when i asked them why, their response was, i am checking the girl out to see her style, the way she walks and how she holds herself. "As if they can read someone by just looking at them" lol to me it is silly and pathetic whats more is that we were ordered by Allah swt (to lower our gaze) and i feel doing that will actually make this other girl warm up to me.

although I had it said before , girls get dressed up for other girls , ''guys don't bother accesories or make up'' , girls do that to be confident while around other girls .

I think girls do this because were realll competetive .......well i am not always sometimes im just checking out the next girls style and if she has something i might like lol.....I think girls do this more tho because we are easly jealous when someone looks better i dunno just a guess

I have noticed it too, and have mostly put it down to the fact that I am not Egyptian and yet married to one.
We attended a wedding this last weekend and one of the bridesmaids was totally freaking me out as every time I looked toward the bridal table she was staring at me. I went to the ladies and while I was patching up my make up I felt someone looking at me and sure enough there she was just standing there staring at me!
I felt like I must have sprouted two heads or something.
I think sometimes it is a territorial thing especially if you are the "odd one out" or the newcomer to a group.
I know when i first came to live here I would go to el Gezira to buy something and could feel all the eyes following me.
As I was "the new bride" and from Australia I sort of expected it in a small rural community and now the locals don't even blink they are all used to me and I them.
I get more odd looks from the tourists if I am wearing hijab and camo pants( my work gear) than I do from the locals these days.
I really don't think that I do it myself, at least I am not aware of it. I am usually to busy trying to follow Arabic conversations to be checking out what someone is wearing or their hairstyle. Except for the hijab I know my clothes and dress style is probably a lot more western than many of the girls at that wedding not that I wear outlandish clothes or tight skimpy stuff.
I love fashion and take pride in my appearance.So I try to take any stare bears as a compliment even though they really can be down right annoying. If I was Egyptian I would be more likely to confront the person and ask what they found so fascinating.
But I am still "new" here so I just put up and shut up as my Dad used to say.

girls are quick to judge what the other girls are wearing, and not wearing, as far as the latest fashion,makeup,jewelry and so on.
sucks...we shouldnt be that way, but it happens

I cant comment on women in Egypt, but in the US we do it all the time. Just today I heard one of the segments of an ABC news show about how women dress to impress each other and not the men in our lives. Men don't tend to notice the little things, but other women do. I do think we are competitive. Sometimes I think its a little bit of jealous, and other times we are just noticing a woman who took the time to put it together.

Sometimes I like how they wear something and I want to "borrow" the idea or to stay away from something that I don't think looks too good (like leggins with skirts or low-riding jeans).

Personally, I look at the clothes and how the person put them together. I think fashion is very interesting and how people mix and match things is fascinating. I have said to another woman "I love your shirt" or something. I have also had a lot of women (and a few men) compliment me on this one pair of shoes I have.

lool tell me about! I was wondering the same thing and finally got to figure it out. Some girls do that to see what the other is wearing, how she's dressed like, what kind of make-up she uses and how she applies it. A lot of girls tend to do that too to see who is prettier, this girl or her! hehehe. of course she ends up thinking she's prettier and more stylish than other girls walking around lol. I did not notice that in USA but did see it happening all the time in Egypt. I do that now too, but only to see what they're wearing and get an idea of the outfit and colors for my future references ;)

Haha kind of random question, for me and my friends I know it's sort of a mix between a "quick judging" thing and a "curious as to what their style is" thing. It's like checking what they're wearing, seeing if it suits them, if they look good, if you would wear that, if you would wear the top and bottom together, do you look better then them, does the top look better on your friend then them, etc. Definitely not trying to make eye contact, and if that happens you either look away or just look at them normally // the odd time a dirty look if they're dressed wayyyy too slutty (I'm picturing this all in a club by the way).

I think in your case if you're just walking around normally then it's just a normal "what's she wearing" type of thing, just looking around, nothing mean or anything, unless of course you're dressing really raunchy for a club or something.... haha.

*shrugs* hope that helps you a bit. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

1. to see where they stand in the "market of women"
2. to fulfill their psychological need of feeling good about themselves
3. to find something to talk about with her mates in the gossip time.
4. to bug some peacful girls by starring (jealousy oriented)
5. to show some admiration and respect (rare cases)

If you're being looked at just take it as a compliment, Farah, at least you know that your existence is being acknowledged.

girls do that because if the other girl ahs something good the other girls gonna want it and really some are what we call bisexual or lesbians nothing wrong with that im just not like that its just the way others are. its nothiong against you just some have staring problems and others are just so nosey and have nothing else to do. just look at them and smile say how is ur day or ask what their staring at or ask if they have astaring problem. some do get jealous over other girls the way they look or their personality or how skinny they are how they dont have to put on makeup to look pretty thats how i am i get jealous b.c i have to dress up to look just ok and it dont even help. at least i dont think so.

lol..once there was a girl in college who came wearing a reaaaally strange outfit..and not decent at all,and she was covering her hair(hard to say hijabi) and a friend of mine tried to take a pic of her..lol...
u know what? the girl saw her and she came to her and told her:''u could've asked me and i would posed for u''!!!..nyhahahahahhaa

but alhamdulelah i dnt have the habit of looking but i like to see decent girls' clothes and admire them,and to see if it looks good maybe i will make something like it...
and i feel like some girls are looking at me,i dnt care,and some girls come up and ask me from where i got the bag or the scarf or sth,i just tell her...

but there are some rude girls who really tend to make me know that they are looking at me,and say stupid comments..rabena yeshfehom...
