I don't believe it is a need.....I believe it is a choice.
You 'need' to eat.You 'don't need' to be rude.

Why do people choose to be rude to others?

Low self esteem is one of the reason to be rude.
You can also add, Education in school and at home.
Social pressure.In some case its their bloody character.Just plain rude

because people are human and eventually everyone will come off rude to someone in their lifetime whether they are meaning to or not

I can be rude, but have no low self esteem, I just get irretated when i am busy with something and someone keeps on interrupting me, I also hate waiting in queues etc. I think pressure especially time pressure makes me rude.

It could be. It could also be depression. It could also be that they are snobby and think the world revolves around them. Maybe they are rich and pwerful and not use to any kind of obstacles to getting what they want when they want it.

edit: If I'm rude, it's usually in response to someone that's rude to me. I'm trying to not do this. It's difficult but I'll never give up. Other than that, I'm usually very polite and considerate. There is no reason to be rude to others. We are all in this life together. No one gets out of life alive. (DOA Foo Fighters) It's better to be remembered as a kind person than a rude one that everyone says good riddance to. :-)

I am only rude when people are rude to me first and trust me it takes a lot to make me rude to others so they must have said something really bad to make me snap.

You must realize that South African English is different than the rest so some times it sounds rude but it isn't , just a way of express your self

I think it depends on the situation, I can be very rude and obnoxious, before beating the living daylights out of you. Seriously though, I think it is mood and situation dependant, if someone is rude to me continuously and I am being ice, then damn, they deserve to be treated the same way.

thats what i think it is. they are not happy with them selves and then they dont want to see other ppl happy so they are rude to other ppl. my way of dealin with these ppl is ignoring them. giving them the same reaction only makes the situation worst.
