Why do people in elevators avoid eye contact??

that's probably because of the private space violation thing, when you are in stairs you can move and greet them "away" from your personal space but in the elevator it gets a little awkward because the personal spaces of people got intersected..

It's a privacy thing......

I guess coz it is like yr stuck in a place with a total stranger who is in a way making u uncomfortable by invading yr privacy. SO you avoid eye contact as a way of escaping this uneasy feeling.

@ Actually yes it is much easier coz then you have more room to move around. It's like when talking to someone and he comes real close to you, my instant reaction would be to smack him, since i am claustrophobic, so if that happens on the stairs i have the option to push him down the stairs.... but in an elevator i close my eyes and pretend no body is there. Lol....... from the deranged thoughts of a claustrophobic.

because it is always so tight & being so close to people makes it embarrassing!

they are polite , esp when there is a lady .
they dont want to look curious and looking too much.
but , in fact , they are fighting a strong desire to look and observe everything !

hahahahhah...i always ask myself the same..
at least i do it because i know the moment i look at someone,he/she'll smile...then they will say sth,if it's girl,it's ok,but if it's a guy...ughhhh..how the hell i will get away from him when we're stuck at the same place....
