You have to try it for yourself. I mean REALLY cook rice rinsed and then cook some not rinsed. It has a different taste. And maybe it's because of the starch that's not good for you or maybe it's not. Starch is in rice and no matter how much you rinse it, it will still be there.
I think it's rinsed because of the taste. (Rinsed before or after.)
I live in Korea and here we eat rice with every meal. I think they know a little bit more about rice than we do. This was the answer one of my Korean colleagues gave me and now it's your answer. |

because sometimes there are debris like dust, small rocks and small insects.
where i am from(philippines) the rice is dried on the roads so it really gets exposed to dust and stuff.
but they say you shouldn't rinse the rice too much because it contains vitamin B. and they say the milky water is good for lactating mothers. :D |

Thats interesting info Tiff... I am currently breastfeeding.
I think some of us just take what we're taught and do it without asking much questions because its just been done that way. I pride myself in the rice department (since it seems the only thing I can cook properly). So I enjoy rinsing so much, it makes me feel like I am truly doing something good.
Whether there is too much of a difference in rinsing or not, I cant be sure. will await other replies to learn more... (",) |

Tiffany has it spot on - basically to get rid of any impurities and excess starch...
Y doesnt it make sense to you Zimmy...?
Ok i see what you mean now - I usually boil the rice in lots of water and a drop or two of oil so it doesnt get sticky or burn (im terrible at cooking )- then when its done - i just drain out the all the water using a collander - i dont know if that counts as rinsing it again - i only rinse before putting it into the pot... |

They rinse it to take the starch out so that the rice grains do not stick together when cooked. Also you should not stir your rice while it is cooking because it breaks the grains and let the starch out and you end up with pap.
Here is a website with more tips on cooking rice.

I never do .......if you have to rinse Basmati you will stuff it up completely. I think it is an old wives tale.....I also do not rinse my Old Mill Stream Brown rice. |

To get the starch out. My mom always rinses out her Tastic, it stops it from overcooking and it stays firm/ grainy. |

To get rid of the starch and the contaminants.
Rice, sugar and other products are transported in ships holds. It isn't packaged till it gets to its destination so it is bound to be contaminated by something including rat droppings etc.
Wash the rice carefully for your healths sake. |

Hello Zim,
When I buy my rice bulk at times, I then will rinse it as I find the odd pebble in the bagged rice. Either then that I just use my 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of cold water, taste of salt, leave lid on until fluffy. Works for me ;-) |

Zim, it is to clean it from dust and any bits of chaff. This really isn't necessary with most modern rice and besides if you rinse it you cannot make lekker rysmelk either!!!! I never rinse rice and I am alright....alright......alright......alr... Lol .) |

I have never seen this done and there is certainly no need to do it after cooking.
Rinsing it before is to remove starch so it doesnt stick together, but you do not have to do this as it isnt harmful and rinsing it will remove any nutrients that may have been added in the rice. |

I also rinse it before cooking to take out any impurities and just drains water afterwards. |
