The people overseas watch a lot of tv and the only information they get about South Africa is either negative or documentarial. Which means they don't have a clue about South Africa.

I live in Korea and I can tell you that most of this is true. I see SA on the tele all day and most of the programs are on AIDS or animals. So you can't really blame them. Their countries chose to show these programs and we have to deal with that.

What we can do is try to re-educate people on our country and show them sites they might learn from. Also we have to promote our country as much as we can. I do that every day in Korea. I've gotten over 300 people to visit SA in 2010 and 2 churches and 2 middle schools in Korea will try homestays in SA in the next year or so. Read this...

And if people are really ignorant and don't wanna listen, why don't you show them this "Lion's Share Video"...
http://southafrica-embassy.or.kr/eng/abo...
Scroll down to Lions Share Video and watch!

And if they still argue, go along with what they say. I get lots of reaction when I tell people about how I got to school on my pet elephant and how my parents are having problems with their pet lions.

Cheers and have a merry time freaking this bozos out with lies they created for themselves.

Media perception are focussed on the poor in South Africa. It sells more news that way. Who would be interested in the wealthy and the rich?

joey
I am sorry that this has happened to you. put it down to poor education and the ignorance of our western youth.
Some people do not know that there are very few underdeveloped areas left in the world and that the world cultures have changed since they were taught at skool.
If you were to ask the average young person in the street, WHERE Africa was on the map they would have trouble firstly holding the map then getting it the rught way up and then even findiny your continent.

On another score, and this does not help the western world conceve your identity one bit....we here have recently been in reciept of scams on the net from girls who showing a beautifull profile and really sexy pictyre in order to interest men into sending them money for "Doctors fees or medical expenses or vital equipment for a disabled granny.
its happened to me twice and I was taken in the first time.....so whats the answer to that one....Best wishes.. XX JOEY XX

kool-K
I'll tell you why? The same reason why every living Nigerian is a criminal is the reason why. They seem to know and experience more about poverty, crime and disease in Africa than we know about it. I'd like to travel and move around get some knowledge about the wolrd but these idiots sit and watch TV and they feel and know more about where you are living than you. This is to show you that even the so called developed countries dont have developed brains and there system is not 100% correct.

It is a widely held belief based on the images portrayed by the international media.

they are stupid people.

K
Well said! But have fun with it - convince them that you're using the computer in your local village and that you're using electricity created by lions running on a treadmill (Flintstones style). Tell them you go to school under a tree and have a pet elephant.
Why not? If they're ignorant then there's no reason not to make them look even more so! I do!

People who have not visited Africa (which most people are), come to know of africa though the television channels such as Discovery, National Geographic etc. These channels show africa as an extremely poor continent, people starving to death, daily gang wars (such as in somalia). People want to see these kind of things and hence only those are shown in TV channels. Nobody wants to see an executive in South Africa going to office and working in air conditioned buildings. People are not interested in normal things like these. They want to see something different on TV.

I am from India, and when I went to the US, people started asking me whether I have an elephant in my back yard and whether I know how to tame a snake. They are asking me those questions because that is what they are shown about India in Discovery and NatGeo.

What they are not told is that, snake charmers and elephant riders in India exist only in very remote areas near the forests and are tribal people whose only livelihood is through animals and trees, and the percentage of these tribal people is only a mere fraction in the total population.

Bottomline is people want to see ONLY abnormal things on TV and only abnormal things about a certain culture or geographic location are shown on TV. Hence people have those impressions about Africa or India.

spell_vera
Because there are many ignorent and stupid people..That's why.

David
They think that about me too, it's really stupid.
