The UN partition that created the state of Israel also proposed a second Arab state from the Mandate. (The first was Transjordan, in 1922, which got 7/8 of the land.)

The League of Arab Nations rejected the offer, told all the Arabs there to flee and reassured them that they could return shortly -- after the Jewish state had been destroyed. But it didn't work out that way.

The Arabs who fled wound up in refugee camps set up by Egypt and Transjordan. Those who stayed in Israel are full Israeli citizens. They make up some 23% of the population.

Palestinian Arab immigration has been severely restricted, and often prohibited, by Arab nations, lest their identity be diluted (i.e., they cease to be an effective propaganda tool against Israel). Incidentally, several of those same Arab nations expelled their resident Jews and confiscated their property. It *should* have been a fairly routine post-war population transfer, messy but common.

Birth-rates have been so high in the Gaza strip that if the Arab population there were to become Israeli citizens, in addition to the 23% who already are, it would be a matter of two to three generations before they became the majority. Those who insist that Israel be destroyed are willing to do it by any means necessary -- military, guerilla, using their kin as political pawns. They'd be quite happy to outnumber and outvote Israeli Jews if that's what it takes. That would certainly mean the end of Israel within this century.

The answer is that in truth, the Arabs cannot bear to have a Jewish state in their midst, even though they have 22 states of their own.

first, Jordan is never Palestine.
Israel is the last unsolved colonial rule in the world. The world is trying to solve the last colonial rule in the world by creating 2 states one for the native people of the country and one for the colonists. So far it is not working.

In the 1948 war Ugly things happend and Ethnic cleansing was one of them, perpetrated by the Israelies. Ben Gurion himself ordered the razing of several Arab villages for instance. Don't deny it, anyway its all in the past now.

Fuad Abu Higla,a senior PA journalist and then a regular columnist in the official PA daily Al Hayat Al Jadida, wrote an article on March 19, 2001 -- before an Arab Summit -- which criticized the Arab leaders. One of the failures he cited, in the name of a prisoner, was that an earlier generation of Arab leaders "forced" them to leave Israel in 1948, again placing the blame for the flight on the Arab leaders.

To the [Arab and Muslim] Kings and Presidents, poverty is killing us, the symptoms are exhausting us and the souls are leaving our body, yet you are still searching for the way to provide aid, like one who is looking for a needle in a haystack or like the armies of your predecessors in the year of 1948, who forced us to leave [Israel], on the pretext of clearing the battlefields of civilians...
So what will your summit do now?"

So the answer is that the want only the Jewish portion of Palestine because they want the Jews out.

Begin by knowing that the Jewish people were expelled from Palestine in 70 CE by the Roman Empire, beginning the Jewish Diaspora. In 638CE Arabs officially settled into the area called Palestine by the Greeks and Romans.

Know that World War II created the conditions for the Holocaust or genocide of 6 million European Jews. After the war the British withdrew their mandate on Palestine and allowed for the land to be split into a Jewish and Arab state against the will of the Arab Palestinians.

Realize that the state of Israel was declared in 1948 increasing tension and violence between Arabs and Jews (Arab Israeli War). Israel's fight for an independent nation resulted in violence, death, the occupation of Jerusalem, and the expulsion of Arab Israelis from their homes and lands signaling the beginning of the Palestinian refugee population.

Remember that Israel went to war in 1967 for 6 days with its Arab neighbors Syria, Jordan and Egypt. The result was Israel had control over the West Bank, the Golan Heights, Sinai and the Gaza Strip. Sinai was later returned to Egypt and the Golan Heights returned to Syria.

Recall that the Palestinian intifada continues to this day in the form of suicide bombers and other bombings. Both sides of the conflict call their aggressive actions retaliatory, highlighting the fact that the situation in the "holy land" is far from being resolved.
