Why has it become trendy for westerners to live in Dubai.?

I'm a american and I don't get why so many westerners are moving the UAE. Aren't they afraid of terrorists. There is a war going on a world away.
Additional Details
To those that are living in Dubai are you making a effort to learn Arabic?

Mediocre westerners get great jobs and completely hopeless ones also fare much better than they could ever have in their home countries. Its about the local government giving undue respect to them. Its about the local arabs being in an inferiority complex.

Its all about color... believe it or not ... the fashion industry, the architecture, the lifestyle almost everything is far superior than west but I dont know why the locals here dont give a damn to their own selves.

You have to experience Dubai to understand it. The Dubai airport alone is worth the trip.

I fear terror no more in parts of the Middle East than anywhere. (UAE, Oman, etc.) We get our impression of that region from the media, which makes it appear as if the whole area is a battle zone and filled with fanatics. Same can be said of the media there in the ME; they see that the USA is filled with gun-slingers, gansters and sexual deviants. Best bet is to see something for oneself, Westerners and Arabs alike!

Lo and behold !
Apart from a number of reasons one of facts which my fellow YA mates have failed to mention is the PSYCHOLOGICAL EDGE. Almost all Westerners are looked up to, given respect on the streets, get cushy jobs way above their educational or mental level then other things like tax-free status. Again another thing not to be missed which apparently may not come into your reckoning is availability of cheap comfort creatures, peace No threat of any kind of terror, long job security and above all
Booze at the end of the day.

Well, first and foremost, the pay is more then most can make in there home countries. The standard of living is very high. One can have a live in maid for only $550 a month. There is a huge gap between the rich and the poor. All westerners are considered rich, because they are. Living here is no different then living in the US, Australia, Canada or Britain. It's probably even safer. We are hoping to stay at least 5 years. We have made so many good friends for many different countries. It's also a great base to do a lot more travelling around Europe and Africa. It's also kind of cool living and working in an other country. We only see the war going on as you do, it's very far away. If everyone is moving here this place must be doing something right. Right?

sandeep n
Westerners move here because they get paid more than there own country and more over they save 30-40 % on there income as here is no tax.

To note: Dubai is not still the most happening place in the world, if lifestyle is concern. There is lot of strictness, incomfortability hanging around.

Terrorism? No, i dont think so.. its very safe. War is in every country and among peoples.

Dubai will make u crazy by its beautiful and remarkable man-made architectures across the city. They have done a few thing which people have never thought off. What else u expect them to do, they have to find a way to live. Oil is expected to get over by 2010.

There is a bad traffic afterall, reason...... they dont have the infrastructure yet to support the number of incoming expats.

If you love nature and its beauty, non-disturning residence... Dubai isn't a place for you.. if u like city, noise, cleanliness... Dubai is for you.

jonasbrothersrgay
It's not a trend. It's a great area for living. Check it out ! Ok , it's not the absolutely best but to me it is. And no, no fear terrorism in Dubai it's very safe. I have lived there for one year and I am planning on moving back there when I graduate.Just because it's called the united ARAB emirates doesn't mean it's packed with terrorists.

and NO you don't have to learn Arabic! Most people speak english very fluently ! don't worry :)

From what I can gather, very few of the people that answered this question have experienced the UAE for themselves.

As a westener myself, with the opportunity to move to the UAE, I can tell you several reasons it's attractive to me.

1. My potential employer will pay me my worth and the respect due my proffession is given liberally.

2. It is safe. Non violent, no guns, the news is not infested with crimes and corrupt legislation.

3. Every thing one would want to do is available... there aren't any hobbies that are not available to you.

4. It is very cost effective to live there and SAVE money... which is almost impossible in the west.

5. Every lay person I came in contact with knew more about western politics and world news then most westerners do.

6. It's a fantastic city...A mixture of NY, Miami, LA, Chicago and spread out like Orlando..

7. The people are very friendly and helpful, I didn't encounter 'attitude' like I do here in the states.

I can go on... and on. But you can see, there are a lot of reasons the UAE is attractive, to me at least.

Also, children are required to learn Arabic in school. French is widely taught and many other laguages and well as lanuage schools are available. IF I move, it is VERY likely I will learn Arabic.

Why not the UAE, is the real question.
Dubai, UAE is the one of the most happening places in the world.
No, there is no terrorism or war here. In fact, it is the most liberal Middle Eastern Country. You can get the best of everything here. Some of the world famous architectural structures are in Dubai. Check out The Palm, Burj Al Arab, The World, The Burj-Tallest Building in the world, and many more.
Great jobs, and no taxes. Great food- you get a variety of foods available from around the world, great malls, and so much more.
The downside-bad traffic, but what else can you expect in a very busy and developing place?

Cause by teaching English there they can make good money and enjoy quite a comfortable life. Sure, there are religious restraints, alcohol only in duty-free shops (or so I've been told) and some other minor details you have to get used to, plus the heat and the fact water is more expensive than oil, but all in all most go cause they hear from others it's a great place to have a good time for a year or two.

josie_lam
it's not trendy, but then again I'm a woman so nothing in that part of the world is trendy for me!

Towelie
Tax free. Great standard of living, no poverty, take ur pick

!truth!
Not all westerners have loads of money and they are the ones who are moving there to be closer to their off-shore bank accounts. They are not afraid of terrorist there because the Islamic government of UAE has very strict laws and punishments. They will not stand for any terrorists doing their terror as it will deter the billionaires and millionaires from moving there.

its a trap!

There are no terrorists in Dubai. You can't even get into Dubai without being a multi billionaire. It is an elite society and most westerners like it because it is in the middle of the ocean. It's also sheek in hollywood and you know how that goes. Bunch of followers out there.

Dubai is becoming the ultimate tourism hub.

I personally think that some of their more conservative laws are atrocious and won't ever spend a dime there.
