Why hasn't the story of the Jewish Refugees from Arab countries, numbering 1,000,000 , more well known? |
My grandmother was expelled from Yemen, she came to Israel in 1949, with most of the other 55,000 Yemenite Jews, and 680,000 other refugees out of 1,000,000. They were put into refugee camps, called Mabarot and eventually into 22 development towns all over Israel. They were persecuted as Dhimmnis with many restrictive laws when they came to Israel they unexpectedly altered the demographics of the state and in the early days received much discrimination, (today we are half of the nation's Jewish Population, nearly 3 million out of nearly 6 million). Many people think all Jews, and therefore Israelis are European but this is completely FALSE!

good information and pages, you worked hard to ask this..
De Comunidades 26 March 2008; BY Arik Hoff Los Angeles Times (X)
The Jews are a people unique: what other people are allowed the Jews were forbidden.
Some nations chased hundreds or maybe thousands of people but there is no problem of REFUGIADOS.RUSIA did so and also Poles and CHECOS.Turkey expel millions of Greeks and Algeria to expel thousands of Frenchs .Indonesia expel much Chineses and nobody talks about Refugees. In The case of wars of the israel arabs always as refugees.
Everyone says that israel law must be applied for refugee return and receive each palestine.Arnold Toynbee says that the expulsion of Palestinians was an unfortunately still larger than the nazism.others country, when he won on the battlefield, le Dicta upon the expiration of the conditions of peace but when israel wins must yield to get peace.
Everybody seems awaiting the Jews who are the only truly Christian army in the world RESIGNACION Christians.
Other countries when they are defeated, managed to survive and RECONSTRUIRSE.SI ISRAEL lost some wars, DESAPARECERIA.
If Egypt Huber defeated Israel 1967 had wiped off the map And no one would have to lift a finger to save Jews.
The compromise that ISRAEL obtained from various governments not worth the paper they THIS FIRMADO.EN the world cry when people die in OR IN VIETNAM RODHESIA But when Hitler murderer of Jews, everybody streets.
The Jews are a nation lonely in the world. IF ISRAEL SUPERVIVE Serer for the effort of the Jews.
At this moment ISRAEL is the only FEEL AND UNCONDITIONAL U.S. allies. ISRAEL able to trust us more than they can trust ISRAEL NOSOTROS.SOLO would have you imagine what would have happened if in 1967 If the Arabs and Russians had won the war to understand how much the survival of ISRAEL is vital for americas and the western world IN GENERAL.
I have a feeling that NOT ME gone: what happens to ISRAEL we happen then to us. IF ISRAEL loses, the Shoah affected us this time.
(X) and UD. now security would have realised, these concepts were Vert more than 30 years ago but reproducible because currently enjoys a surprising. |

Because Israel took them in and gave them a home.
My friend's mother was one of them from Yemen. She wants to go back for a visit to show her children where she grew up. But Yemen won't let Israelis visit. |

BEcause they were absorbed into Israel and became Israelis instead of being kept in refugee camps as pawns for cynical haters of Israel to use as propaganda.

Because it would conflict with the notion that Jews have no right to be in the Middle East. |

It has to do with how the story was promoted in media which was limited and because Jewish people are a true minority in the world so we have to be are own advocate |

because jews don't and didn't whine about it. they moved to israel and made a life there.
the palestinians would be wise to learn from that example. stop whining, move to a real arab country, and go on. |

Some background:
Under no circumstances were Jews in Arab countries considered truly equal. Among the Jews in Arab lands were many individual personal successes and regionalized intermittent prosperity, but the tradition of persecution was characteristic throughout most of Jewish history under Arab rule. If the dhimmi burdens were light in one particular region, the Jew had the residue of fear left from the previous history of pogroms and humiliations in his area. These harsh and ancient dhimma restrictions persisted even up to the present time to some degree, in some Arab communities, and their spirit -- if not their letter -- continued generally throughout the Arab world.
All citizens are equal in Israel. Arabs serve in the Knesset parliament and are ambassadors to foreign countries. And some Arab Knesset members even conspire with the enemy, yet they remain members of the parliament.
Their standard of living is far higher than that of Arabs in neighboring countries and in the Palestinian Authority. They have opportunities that their fellow Arabs outside of Israel can only dream of.

The self-evident reason is that much of the world does not want to struggle with the truth. Open-minded people would have to accept that Jews (and other minorities) are legitimate residents of the Middle East, and Arabs would have to relinquish their false claims to Israel.
This dilemma was discussed in the book, "From Time Immemorial" by Joan Peters. http://www.amazon.com/Time-Immemorial-Arab-Jewish-Conflict-Palestine/dp/0963624202 The Muslim world has tried repeatedly to suppress this. Those who genuinely want to understand the dhimmi laws in Yemen and Arab lands can read one of Bat-Yeor's books on the subject or see this: http://www.dhimmitude.org/archive/by_lecture_10oct2002.htm
If a Yemenite Jew died, leaving behind underage children, these orphans were forcibly taken from their families and converted to Islam. Many of the Jews born in Yemen whom I know can explain in detail the reality of life for dhimmis. They described how every girl born into the community had to be paired off extremely young to her future (Jewish) husband in order to prevent her being kidnapped by Muslim neighbors. The few Jews remaining in Yemen today are still forced to pay the jizya (mandatory dhimmi tax) to safeguard their tiny community.
Dhimmis may never testify in court against a Muslim and have no legal right to dispute or challenge anything done to them by Muslims. There is no impediment to a Muslim raping a dhimmi woman. If a Jew dared to defend himself against a Muslim attacker by striking him, the Jew was killed.
A new book also explains the machinations of those bent on obscuring the historical truth. http://www.dhimmi.org/Eurabia.html
"Readers who seek a fair resolution of the Arab-Israel conflict will be shocked by the evidence produced in these pages . . . ."
--Well put, Ms. Miche!
I disagree with (just) one of Gershon's points. Some of the Mizrachi Jews were educated people. For example, there were quite a number of Jewish Iraqi professionals (teachers, etc.) who made aliya. (The arrival of some of them in suits and proper shoes contrasted sharply with the appearance of native Israeli farmers in sandals and casual attire.) And, in terms of Jewish learning, the average new arrivals from Yemen, for example, were better versed in Torah than some of the locals (including Ashkenazim) whom they encountered. |
|

Gershon ben David
 |
The Jewish Refugees from Yemen, Morocco, Ethiopia, Iran, Syria, Iraq and other Arab / Muslim countries are significant part of the Israeli demography. The Ashkenazi Jews were a bit more educated than the brothers and sisters from the backwards Arab / Muslim world. Unfortunately that caused some problems during the absorption process. I agree with you, the story of the Jewish Refugees from the Arab / Muslim countries must be told that we learn from the past and we accept each other on equal terms in Eretz Israel. |
|

Ms.Miche
 |
Shlomo,
Because by nature, Jewish people who were harassed and kicked out from Arab nations did not whine to the rest of the world about their suffering - they simply carried on with their lives and made the best of it elsewhere.
Sincerely,
Ms. Miche ; }) |

I would suggest that one should read Tom Segev's book titled "1949: The First Israelis". In it he describes how Israel reached out and took in every Jew that wanted to come to Israel. The government sent agents to all the Middle Eastern countries and would assist Jews in fleeing to Israel.
Did it all go smoothly, of course not. There was a mass immigration to Israel and at times government officials were at a loss as to the proper course of action. However, they didn't turned any Jew away and in time it worked out. Read his book, it's diffficult to believe that it only took place a short 60 years ago.
To give an example of some of the problems they faced with the new citizens. In some towns in Morrocco all the males were blind. They had a congenital eye problem that had never been treated. Many of the men from several of the countries didn't know a trade. They had never worked at any job in their entire life. Just studied Torah and I assumed that their wife worked. Israel accepted then all and how much of this worked out is what makes Mr. Segevs book so interesting. |

They lived there in peace untill 1948 so you figure!
Ms.Miche : But they still want the world to pay for the "Holocoust" hmmmm.. !!! |
|

HopelessZ00

Perhaps because immediatly after they had become refugees they were given a homeland and they were no longer refugees. That's why the world is now focused on the refugees from such places as Darfur and Palestine as they do not have a homeland. Pray for Peace. |

Those aren't refugees. They are immigrants to Israel. Only a very few number of them were actually kicked but most of them left it WITH THEIR WILL as soon as Israel was declared as an independed Jewish state. |

Because their sufferings were masked by the Holocaust industry. I however refuse to believe the figure you give. |
