Well , the Greek boy may have a lot of letters after his name but they don't count for diddly squat in the real world unless you start applying that knowledge with some common / uncommon sense ...

It's all very well to quote statistics but we all know you can twist & distort them to suit any argument. Take his quote re illiteracy...may be true but I would bet that if it is , it applies to the very aged , many of whom are well past their working lives.The younger generations are among the best educated in the world , most with degrees & in many cases multiple degrees !

Why is Lebanon poor ...that's where a knowledge of current & recent events will give you the answer . Because neighbouring countries are using Lebanon as their own private warzone to settle grudges & old scores instead of facing their enemies directly ! Surely you saw the events of 2 years ago when Israel destroyed years of rebuilding in just a few short weeks ...

Im poor ! I live in America ! I barely can make ends meet! I can go without food for days ! Im helping my ageing Mother who has a very hard time with doctors who to me are money hungry ******* s who dont really care about you!
let me say all the people here in Lebanon travel are so careing and wonderful and dont have a nasty thing to say to any one (Like other categories) If some people are poor they must surely have a lot of love to replace it! Peace

If you have asked .....Why is Lebanon poor? it should have been better.
Everyone knows here that "soo poor" are some african countries, where kids die everydays bcoz havent food. where AID's is an epidemy, and where dictators only think about themselves. I could go on telling reasons for a country be "soo poor"
Yes.....you are right. Lebanon isnt a rich country, although many of the pple lives as if they are.
Lebanon is a common country, trying to overcarry many troubles with Syria and Israel..a country that has gone through wars...and that still tries to survive as it can.
I dont know where you are from.......but for sure you havent had wars or invaders that stole everything from ur country during almost 30 years as Syria did.
it is easy to talk, when one hasnt problems.
Anyways...I should invite you to visit Lebanon, and to see how lebanese pple live. I dont know another pple from any country that face the troubles as they do.
I myself am living in a nice and calm country......that in spite of not having wars is a 3rd world country.
We arent "soo poor"......looooooooooooool, we are common pple that live and work for a salary, that allows us to live with so much comfort.
Is that bad?

poor in what? define poverty! towers,malls,roads,material things,etc..well this is out of control at the moment or the moments earlier which goes back to more than 30years as you all know!! and we should be applaused for what we are and have now in hands!!!!!!!
but we are rich in much more important and valuable things things!! We have the history,culture and the unique and precious blood of what is called "Lebanon" !

It was interesting to see that some people don't believe that we are a poor country. Just because a certain class of people is living it up does not make up for the fact that another is completely destitute and the fact that we owe a fortune in debts as George stated.

Why? Aussie was spot on, we have charming neighbours on either side who will make sure that we'll never get ourselves out of this.

WHOA!! for all the people above who said that Lebanon is not poor, they are obviously living in a dreamworld. I am not Lebanese but i have a degree in economics and political science so i feel safe in answering this.

Lebanon is poor or developing for many SERIOUS reasons.

1. 28% of Lebanese live BELOW the poverty line. That means they barely have enough money to drink and EAT!

2. 28% of Lebanese are ILLITERATE. that means they dont know how to read and write their own name. (Definition of illiterate)

3. VERY low GDP. - The average person in Lebanon makes $6,000 dollars a yr. -thats PEANUTS compared to the West.

4. Very corrupted government. Politicians are in power for money and their own sake NOT because they care for Lebanon. (most of them anyways)

5. The unemployment rate is 20% - one of the highest rates in the world! That's literally 1 in 5.

6. HUGE DEBT - 203% of the country's GDP is owned in debts.

7. The imports surpass the exports

8. And one of the most serious reasons -Continuing bad foreign relations with other neighbors in the Middle East which corrupt the economy pretty bad. Now i am not going to talk about this because i assume most Lebanese know what i am talking about.

Those are the top 8 serious reasons why Lebanon is developing/thirld word country. I am sorry if i was harsh but it is what it is. I just want to verify that i am not judging anyone here and i am not judging Lebanon in any case because my own country was a poor country at one point in history. So i am only explaining the reasons why Lebanon is a developing country, nothing else.

Your question is strange. Have you been to Lebanon? There are large inequalities but, even what used to be the poorest people have been doing better due to donations from a certain country. Quite a few people on the Fortune 100 richest people in the world are Lebanese. That is shocking, considering how small the population of Lebanon is. In Beirut, in any case, it is quite conspicuous. Apartments facing the Mediterranean go for $5 million, and believe me, they go. Women still wear the most exclusive clothes. People drive fancy cars. Restaurants are full, whatever the security situation.
For the sake of complete disclosure, the country is heavily indebted to International organizations, which is a novel phenomenon for Lebanon.

leb has an above average GDP per capita. so its NOT SO poor. IGNORANCE IS BLISS!

In case you dont know what GDP is its Gross Domestical Product and its one of the main indicators of how developed the country is how good its economy is

Because of the bad management of its resources and because of the division in politics that reflected on the people who are divided, no one will work for the best of Lebanon as a whole but for the best of their people in Lebanon... many good sectors. sectors that can make Lebanon a pioneer are being neglected and abandoned... agriculture, tourism is not possible nowadays because of politics; the resources such as water and the fact that the Down Town is paralyzed is causing lots of families to stay home with no work and lots of incomes for the government not to be incoming anymore.. shops, restaurants and sites are closing down...
