Indeed my friend I find the Talmud extremely "controversial" as you very well put it.
I have actually Yiddisch copy at home where with the help of my trusted online translating programs, I am trying to see why these people write all of those terrible things about us the non-Jews.
I have to admit it is a very difficult book to understand because it was written from people that had nothing with our Western Culture.
An Iranian or an Afghani person would have an easier job in understanding all of those "metaphors" and examples.
A really difficult book to understand the reason why it has been written since it contains too much hatred and "don't dos" instead of "Dos".

OK I here to set the record straight.
Talmud-wise there are two kinds of books.
The first kind is the "Lite" version with all the juicy parts carefully removed.
The second kind is the one with all of those things the jews deny their existence.
As I said a few weeks back you must not trust the translated copies.
There's nothing in there.
I was able to trace an online version of a german (yiddish) version and a Russian one.
Every thing you see posted in those sites are 100% authentic stuff.
Do not trust the on-line copies, no-matter how pompous or authorative their writers may sound to your ears.
maybe one day when I am at home I may upload to Yahoo my copies for you to download and and see with your own eyes.
Until then Steel out |

For someone who asked a few days ago ' is the talmud really offensive '.
I dont think your in any position to make such a blunt statement.
Read it for yourself ( not on the internet as many are false, such as the answers above ).
And its spelled ' Talmud '. |

For those of us who have read it, Christians included, it is far from controversial.
I continue to pray for the heavy burden of hate to be lifted from your heart. |

Why is the Jewish Talmud so controversial? Because it's Jewish, of course!
There's really nothing controversial in the Talmud itself. It's basically a companion text to the Hebrew Bible, specifically the Torah, which is the primary written source for Jewish Law. Originally, the Torah was meant to be explained orally, the full details of the laws passed down from teach to student, face to face. And while that still happens among Orthodox Jews today, it was about 2,000 years ago that Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi (Judah the Prince), the leader of his generation, decided that at least parts of the oral tradition needed to be committed to writing, lest they best lost in the current diaspora. That's where the Mishnah (the first component of the Talmud) comes from. The mishnayos (that's the plural) were written in a very condensed, cryptic format, in a way that people understood at the time, and which was designed for easy memorization, and to pack as much information into the least possible text. A few generations later, as the Mishnah became more difficult to decode, a companion text to it was written, the Gemara (in Aramaic, which was the lingua franca of Jews at the time). This process continued throughout the centuries, with the sages of each generation adding their commentaries.
Basically, the Hebrew Bible (in translation, Christians know it as the "Old Testament") is like a set of notes taken in class, whereas the Talmud is the actual lecture. The notes are written in shorthand, and are a helpful tool, but are really no substitute for actually going to class. That's how Jews and non-Jews can read the Bible and have understandings that differ so much at times. Because the Jews read the text in their original language, in their original context, with commentaries based on a tradition that, like the Written Torah, goes all the way back to Sinai.
Why do Jews need the Talmud? Well, lots of reasons. A couple of examples would be that in the Bible, G-d tells Moses to speak to the Israelites and tell them that they shall only eat meat from animals that were slaughtered as G-d commanded them. But nowhere does the text describe the process of kosher slaughter. For that, you look to the Talmud. Another example - when talking about the Jewish laws of damages, the Bible says "an eye for an eye" (well, it actually says "eye under eye," but people tend to translate this the other way). Non-Jews look at this and think of the ancient Jewish legal system unyielding and harsh, and encouraging vengeance. On the contrary - a more Talmudic approach shows that this particular law refers to monetary compensation. Through an exegesis of the word itself, we find that the "eye under eye" refers to money, and not a license for revenge. (For more on that, see a previous answer of mine: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=An0facUZkx2m3vfoT9u22snty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081009153107AA92TUs&show=7#profile-info-5UyO2OBzaa )
Still, the Talmud is controversial, because people fear what they don't know, and people tend to hate Jews. So something that is Jewish, plus something that is unknown, is to be treated with disdain. There are a lot of "exposes" out there, seeking to "unmask" the Talmud. Usually this "unmasking" consists of a parade of mistranslations, verses taken out of context, and complete forgeries (often citing Talmudic tractates that don't actually exist).
And if you don't want to take my word for it, heck, read it for yourself. You can buy copies of the Talmud, with English translation, and even additional commentaries, from publishers like Artscroll: http://www.artscroll.com

Unless you want to truly understand in which holy books the jews believe in, I think this question is out of context.
The jews are responsible of war crimes of racism and the slaughter of the Palestinian nation only. Nobody can accuse them in what they believe.
Even if their God could be in a very different shape from ours or yours, (I think the jewish God is a Wall somewhere in Israel, but I maybe wrong because I don't care at all) and you have to respect that.
So instead of repeating ridiculous racist questions for something that can only offend them and they will be right on this one, why don't you post here your thoughts about, let's say the illegal demolitions or the torturing habits of the jew settlers and the Army against the native Palestinian Arabs?
You can advice them where they are wrong, not where they are right. And I think there are plenty of crimes these people need to pay handsomely for.
Trust me on that.
I hope that you understood what I am trying to tell you here.

It isn't. However, anti-Semites like to lie about its content in order to try and create hatred against the Jews. Nothing new unfortunately- just the way things are when people hate other people and don;t care about how many lies they tell inorder to create hatred. |

People who never read it try to make it out to be controversial.
Talmud is 2 parts. The Mishna which anti semites never talk about. The other part is the Gemara which they do bring up. It is 73 volumes and it just a number of dicussions by Jewish sages about various topics related to the Old Testament.
Alot of the sites showing the talmud are actually not even in the Talmud, someone made the stuff up. Like they makeup fake volumes and chaptures and fake book names. |

You must be talking about the Zoogot (couples) controversy !
The existence of controversy in the Talmud bligates authors who hold such a model to recognize some sort of crisis within the chain of transmission. It includes an implicit dangers as well. Demonstrating the presence of crisis, threatens to cast doubt on the credibility of the process of transmission as a whole. If both neglect and forgetfulness eroded a given body of knowledge transmitted from Moses onwards, what guarantees the credibility of the core of tradition itself? Authors who hold such a view naturally tend to marginalize the extent of controversy within halakhah in order to preserve the credibility of the chain of transmission. Ibn Daud claims that no controversy exists concerning the main body of halakhah:"...Our rabbis of blessed memory never differed with respect to a commandment in principle, but only with respect to its detail".
I hope this helped . |

The Talmud is not controversial, far from it....
The only people who claim it is are those who like to spread Arab and Nazi propaganda.
