The First Dragon

Why is there such a question about the legitimacy of the state of Israel?

Is there any other state whose legitimacy is continually denied?
Or is it because Israel happens to be a Jewish state?
Additional Details
The land used to belong to the Ottoman Empire, which fell in WWII. Then the land had no government so the UK was put in charge. They helped found Jordan and Israel.
Now, of course almost every country took its land from a former owner; but this land's former owner was defunct already.

Because some people have a tendency to be bigoted. Israel is the only predominately Jewish state therefore they have issues with that. It is not new, in previous times they didn't want us to live here, or there, now anywhere. They can just go fly a kite because the modern state of Israel is now 60 years old and that is the way it is and that is the way it will remain.

For setting the record straight, Israel is indigenous to the region and was already present when the Middle East was involved in modern nation building and already had the capital of Jerusalem, as it is the City that David built and we've had it as our central location for thousands of years, NON-STOP.

The neighbors got their share of their modern states, with their appropriate corresponding capitals, and the radicals didn't want Israel to receive her appropriate portion. It is an err to say that Israel is from Europe or Russia and it is the prerogative of any modern sovereign nation to allow immigration to whomever they deem fit. Israel says worldwide Jewry is welcome, and that's the way it is, and that is nobody's business except Israels.

The countries that waged war on fledgling Israel (14May1948)
Jordan 25 May 1946, Syria 17 April 1946, Lebanon 22 November 1943, Egypt 18 February 1922, Iraq 3 October 1932, North Yemen 1918

If people have issues with modern nation building, then chances are they'd have to have issues with just about every country on this planet. All the former empires are gone, no more ancient persians, babylonians, romans, greeks etc. Modern people's have their own cozy little space now and nobody was left out.

Palestinians left out? Hardly. Jordan got 80% of the former Palestine Mandate these "new" Palestinan people are just a radical political group to wage perpetual war on Israel. ---->

"Palestine and Jordan are one..." said King Abdullah in 1948

"Palestine is Jordan and Jordan is Palestine; there is only one land, with one history and one and the same fate," Prince Hassan of the Jordanian National Assembly was quoted as saying on February 2, 1970.

Accordingly, Abdul Hamid Sharif, Prime Minister of Jordan declared, in 1980, "The Palestinians and Jordanians do not belong to different nationalities. They hold the same Jordanian passports, are Arabs and have the same Jordanian culture."

"The truth is that Jordan is Palestine and Palestine is Jordan," said King Hussein of Jordan, in 1981.

"The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct "Palestinian people" to oppose Zionism. For tactical reasons, Jordan, which is a sovereign state with defined borders, cannot raise claims to Haifa and Jaffa. While as a Palestinian, I can undoubtedly demand Haifa, Jaffa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem. However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of Palestine, we will not wait even a minute to unite Palestine and Jordan." -- PLO Executive Committee member Zuhayr Muhsin, March 31, 1977, interview with the Dutch newspaper Trouw."

If lands can be claimed depending upon past real or dubious history then the whole worlds map will be upside down, nobody can give you correct boundaries of kingdoms which existed just before 500 years then how can one make claims about promised land 1000s of years ago,at the cost of millions of innocent sufferings?

Creation of Israel is a pure mockery and a blow to secularism. ISRAEL IS NO REAL, SHE IS PURELY ILLEGITIMATE. This is the plain truth

Google up "Partition Plan" which they accepted and is the sole legal basis for this insidious government. Ask yourself what they are doing in the other 45% of Mandate Palestine. You know, the domain set aside for the Palestinians. Yes. That place. Don't give me that line about how "they" rejected it; that doesn't have any legal bearing whatsoever on the fact that the other 55% is what the Jewish Agency accepted. Arab states moved troops into position, most notably Jordan's Arab Legion,to protect the Palestinian territory. Within two hours of the British departure the Jews invaded Palestinian territory and subjected Jerusalem to ferocious attack, then - in what was to become a familiar refrain - claimed they were acting "pre-emptively". Ok,so the question still remains: what were they doing in Jerusalem? It is well outside of the jewish demarcation; for six months in 1947 during the Partition debate they did not raise any issue about Jerusalem, nor in the six months that followed. Legally, the "Israel" that the U.S. recognized is the Israel founded on the borders of the Partition Plan. And that is 55% - not 100% plus Syria's Golan Heights. Same with the UN. Legally the area accorded under the Partition Plan on November 29,1947 is the only legal entity anyone recognizes.
As to the inevitable (yawn) claim of being singled out,the old oh-oh it is all because we are Jewish bit,you can save that one. Google up Yugoslavia or Nazi Germany. Yugoslavia offers the best comparison. Or were they just being Singled Out because of anti-Slavonic prejudice? I think not. I think there were some concerns about the way it operated. Ditto the now legally defunct "Israel".

Because it is an Ethnic State, the only one since the fall of the Third Reich. Ethnicity and nationality are conjoined. Thus,it is fundamentally racist. It cannot be otherwise. Zionism was clearly modeled after German pan-nationalism which led Herzel to the conclusion that the Ethnic State was the wave of the future; he was wrong.

Pro Israelis will go back thousands of years to prove that Palestine belongs to them. Anyone can do this with other countries ie England belongs to Italy as it was occupied by the Romans way back.

if everyone in the world started returning and asking for the land that was originally their's the world would be in big trouble.
also have you noticed how isrealis pat each other on their backs with theories (unproven historically) only they believe.
Dont you dare equate everything jewish with isreal. I have several jewish friends in the Uk who are simply appalled at Isreal. They wouldnt like to be associated with you lot. Half of you have 'returned' from god knows where (and what about palestinian right to return to their own homes??) and the other half are converts who are basically economic migrants.
So many people think Saudi is appalling - are they all anti muslim bigots then??
Only the very deluded will believe this nonsense Lupine spouts which has no historical basis and I love the way she scatters dates about with a free abandon - 3000 BC, 3400 Bc.... wonder if there was even proper civilzation here then!!

Based on its historical credentials Israel should be recognized as a state more readily than practically any other state on this planet. It should be recognized not just de facto because it exists, having all the attributes of statehood, but it must be recognized as the unique historical homeland of the Jewish people. Yet, this recognition has been problematic throughout the last 60 years of its politically independent existence. There are still scores of Islamic states that do not recognize the very existence of the State of Israel, not to speak of its extensive historical Jewish past. Moreover, many states that maintain diplomatic relationship with Israel hesitate to recognize it as the Jewish historical homeland. Even the United States, which recognizes Israel de Jure, based on international commitments to create a national home for the Jewish people, does not officially attribute this recognition to the rights of the Jewish people to their ancient homeland.

Israel is a legitimate country, there is no question about it.It has been the land of the Jewish people for more then 3000 years.Jewish people have maintained ties to their historic homeland for more than 3,700 years. The Jewish people base their claim to the Land of Israel on at least four premises: 1) the Jewish people settled and developed the land; 2) the international community granted political sovereignty in Palestine to the Jewish people; 3) the territory was captured in defensive wars and 4) God promised the land to the patriarch Abraham.
Even after the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the beginning of the exile, Jewish life in the Land of Israel continued and often flourished. Large communities were reestablished in Jerusalem and Tiberias by the ninth century. In the 11th century, Jewish communities grew in Rafah, Gaza, Ashkelon, Jaffa and Caesarea.

The Crusaders massacred many Jews during the 12th century, but the community rebounded in the next two centuries as large numbers of rabbis and Jewish pilgrims immigrated to Jerusalem and the Galilee. Prominent rabbis established communities in Safed, Jerusalem and elsewhere during the next 300 years. By the early 19th century — years before the birth of the modern Zionist movement — more than 10,000 Jews lived throughout what is today Israel.1 The 78 years of nation-building, beginning in 1870, culminated in the reestablishment of the Jewish State.
“Nobody does Israel any service by proclaiming its 'right to exist.'
srael's international "birth certificate" was validated by the promise of the Bible; uninterrupted Jewish settlement from the time of Joshua onward; the Balfour Declaration of 1917; the League of Nations Mandate, which incorporated the Balfour Declaration; the United Nations partition resolution of 1947; Israel's admission to the UN in 1949; the recognition of Israel by most other states; and, most of all, the society created by Israel's people in decades of thriving, dynamic national existence.

Israel's right to exist, like that of the United States, Saudi Arabia and 152 other states, is axiomatic and unreserved. Israel's legitimacy is not suspended in midair awaiting acknowledgement....

There is certainly no other state, big or small, young or old, that would consider mere recognition of its 'right to exist' a favor, or a negotiable concession.â€

I assume you are referring to the government itself. The answer: because of it's long and ugly history of disregarding international law.

i think it's wrong for us to give legitimacy to these crazy anti-semites. you're right, no other country gets this treatment, but the ones who make those claims against israel are in the minority. they are hateful, impotent losers who can only whine. we shouldn't even ask this question.

Its because its a jewish state. Criticism of israel has now become just a convenient cover for people to air their anti semitic views.

Some one said here that Israel is not ''their country ''

well last time i checked America belonged originally to native tribes who inhabited the land for 10s of thousands of years before white invaders came and took it and called it their own...

do you see anyone questioning the legitimacy of america ? perhaps we should...

And Australia - again - inhabited by aboriginies for many thousands of years before white people came, took it by force , subjected the original inhabitents to abuse

Anyone questioning the legitimacy of australia ?? no ? why not ?? isnt it the same principle that people are arguing why israel isnt legitimate..???

and what about france , or england or russia, or pakistan or many others. .. all have invaded other countries that now form part of those countries - why does no one question THEIR legitimacy ???

what - according to all you anti israelers out ther is the differance between america, australia, russia, england, ????

believe me - native americans and aboriginies have suffered far worse than any palastinian ... lets take you to court for your war crimes - no ? didnt think so ...

but then those countries arent made up of jews are they ...

you only have to look back in history to see that its one rule for them and another for jews....

when all this anti israelers living in the US and Australia etc go back to where THEIR ancestors came from then THEN you have a right to complain about israels actions ...

until then, countries invade each other, war happens, one side wins - its been going on since time began - get over it already and stop picking on jews !

mainly because most arab states opposed the creation of israel quite violently - the British, who weren't keen on alienating them (even if they supported Hitler in WW2) were quite hesitant even after all their comitees they sent confirmed that the best thing to do is to create two states. finally, Jordan and Israel were created, in the vain hope that it'll satisfy the jewish and arab population. when by UN voted israel's right to exist, the joined armies of his arab neighbors attacked her to destroy it. they were defeated by the small Israeli army.
israel was attacked (again) in the Six-Day War, by its neighbors, Syria, Jordan and Egypt - and again they didn't succeed to destroy her :)
in the Jom Kippur war israel got attacked by Egypt (what's new?) who used weaponry supplied by the Soviet Union. Israel won again, in fact, the IDF was very successful and they reached Cairo. Egypt turned to the powers to intervene and to stop israel.
naturally, the UN (who hadn't said anything against Egypt attacking israel), demanded from Israel to stop fighting.
after the Yom Kippur war the arab states were very angry by this defeat and that Egypt (again) failed to destroy israel, and their answer was the oil crisis in 1973. they raised the oil prices sky high and demanded the International community to condemn israel - else they will rise oil prices even higher.
the despaired European community whose industry and traffic were almost paralyzed by the oil crisis, condemned israel for it's 'agression' :)
from this time on the media and the worried eyes of the international community focused on israel as they understand that any crisis in the middle east will also influence them.

Parts of the Arab world are trying to accomplish via propaganda what they couldn't manage militarily, the destruction of a Jewish-majority democracy and the return of the land to Muslim rule.

Nobody complained much when Egypt, Syria and Jordan grapped parts of the land that should have been the 2nd Arab-majority state for themselves.

These things only seem to become a problem when they're useful to undermine the Jewish-majority state.

These terms do not apply to all of the middle east. All of the countries were created after WW1 and fall of Ottoman Empire.......ironically Israel has the oldest flag in the region.

Their best argument is that most of the population in Israel at its creation were immigrants (albeit refugees) and have not been living there for the past 300 years.
