Why would anyone want a cat as a pet?

Ha Ha .... I hate cats, they catch all my wild birds and give me hay fever, they sleep on your bed and furniture and leave hair everywhere. They jump on the counter/table and eat your food, the sleep on top of babies, the domestic cat is the cause of the extinciton of hundreds of different species world wide. Oh yes and they carry a terrible incurable disease toxioplasmosis ... deadly when humans get it.

Cats are very intelligent creatures. My cat talks with me and follows me. She even walks on a lead. I have played fetch with her with her favourite mouse toy. I prrrrrefere cats because they dont jump on your clean clothes with muddy paws, they dont chew on your expensive shoes, they dont drool on you or bark and make a hell of a noise when ever some one walks past the gate.

Food time is easier because they dont eat themselves sick, so as long as there is always something to nibble on they are fine. Cats are very playful, you just need to wiggle a piece of string and they will play.

Cats are house trained from just about birth (at least my kitty was). All they need is a litter box or an open window.

And you think a dog is good security? It so easy to throw a piece of poisoned meat over the wall and your "security" is breached.

Dont get me wrong, I do love dogs and its fun to have something that sits when you tell it to, but you spend enough time with a cat and she will do the same :-D

Actually, my cat does play fetch. And idk, she's good company and really cute! And also, having a cat teaches children responsibility and good treatment of animals. Also, she has plenty of character!

you dont have to take them out at various hours of the day to poop, they dont need baths because they bathe themselves

well, my cat is talkative and is almost like a dog, he meows when he wants to go outside cause he doesn't like the litter box, when he wants attention or when he wants to play with me its the matter of how you treat your cat that they will treat you back plus dogs smell like **** and want too much attention its annoying

Actually, yes! My cat used to play fetch with little paper balls, it was so cute!

They do have character, believe me. They are soft and gentle, and loving. They are a lot of fun to have around, and require very little 'maintenance'. Very few things in life as calming and heart warming as a cat purring contently.

How could I forget to say!! A few years ago in SA, my cat protected me! Against a snake! He fought the snake like it was Rambo night! I was so proud of him ( I am so scared of snakes).

Only a little brown house snake, but still.. As they say, it is the idea that counts! LOL! Thanks for the question, that brought good memories. :-)

Loved, loved, loved my cats and dogs when I had them. Really miss them now.

Cats have different personalities. My cat died recently, aged 19, and was the best cat I've ever had. It was constantly wanting to be around people and very affectionate. No it wouldn't have served as an intruder deterrent, but he slept in my bed like a person (body under the covers, head on the pillow) and was always good company and made me feel loved.

Yes, there are cats which don't make the best pets, but there are also ones like mine which do.

Why not.... they are clean, don't leave landmines, don't bury bones, sleep quietly, don't bark, don't eat messy, soft and cuddly, playful and alert, i can watch my cat play with a ball, toying with it, doing summer salts to catch it, jumps and take a insect in flight and no bug will survive when she's around, i love her and can just watch her play sleep or wash for hours on end

I love cats, so i might be a bit biased.
Cats can be far more affectionate than dogs; you cant really have a dog snuggling on your lap (esp for us guys - ouch!).
Cats can be fun to play with; my cat can be entertained with nothing more complex than a screwed up paper ball; and its cute watching her!
My cat comes when called, even if im not giving her food...

Also research has shown that cat owners suffer less from heart conditions.

I kind of agree with you there. never really liked cats all that much, untill recently when i did work experience at the RSPCA (a place for stray or abandoned cats and dogs) They have heaps of cats there and at the start i didnt really want anything to do with them, but as you get to know them a bit you realise they do have a lot of personality and they are really friendly. they love a pat and always want to jump up on your lap for a cuddle. the kittens are especially cute, everyone loves kittens. and btw some of them do come when you call their name, also cats a lot quieter to have around, dont need much taking care of and are no where near as loud as the dogs. i still love the dogs though.

Well i dont have cat i have dog 2 them but u have remember me and u may not like them but other people do they may be easier for other take care of! and some people may not like alot noise so maybe before judging think about those people and yes i have played fetch with cat!

Well I'm allergic to them so how's that for a start?
Back in Cape Town my Staffie developed a taste for them, cats are quick but so are determined staffies!

One day the neighbour's cat was perched on top of the vibracrete boundary wall antagonizing my Staffie...
Now picture this, he took a few steps back and off like a bolt charged into the vibracrete panels headfirst, the whole wall shook, the cat got such a fright it literally jumped up and lost it's grip, luckily (for the cat) it hung on to the edge (in a state of shocked paralysis) by it's claws with **** resting over one very excited staffie - this whole scene I witnessed through the kitchen window, I stepped in quickly and pushed the cat over the other side!

When we left SA he went to live with some good friends who were pet crazy. Labrador, hamsters, parrot, and ... a kitten!
The cat and him are now inseparable, they even sleep in the same little house together!

I don't like Cats either.
Here in Durban - the snakes take care of the Rats and Mice and Gekho's - so I have no use for a cat.

Although I think cats are beautiful animals I won't have one as a pet. Its the old cat-people vs dog-people thing. And I'm allergic to cat hair so that makes it a double no-no.
I have seen very affectionate cats with lots of character and personality who play with their "owners" and so forth. As guardians, no, but they can be great as pets if you like them. As said, I personally won't have one, I have 2 massive dogs who'll eat it anyway :P but a best friend of mine is a big cat lover and her cats are always as said above, affectionate, friendly, playful, etc.
Now the real question is, why is this question under "south africa" and not under "pets"?

I hate cats too. But i think that they're just a lot less work than dogs. And that's the main reason people like them.

I find them rather boring...they laze around, climb trees, scratch, and like you said, just no character...they look so sullen. I prefer dogs, you can get them to sit, etc. They're so much more lively and really are man's best friend. Meh, I'd rather have a dog thanks. Also, if someone breaks into your house and you have a cat...who's gonna be scared of that? Dogs are better for that.

you know the only one in my household who loves cats is my boerboel. She loves to chase and hunt them down..and she is very successful. many a shallow grave in a felt nearby...

I don't get why anyone would keep cats, they are useless creatures. My jack russels catch all the mice and rats. Who needs a cat.

I hate cats. All they neighbours cats poo in MY YARD! They fight all hours of the night ... Im getting electric fencing soon YIPPIE!!
