Will DVD rental shops go out of fashion in the next, say 5 years?

No way. Some people like the hassle of going to a DVD store to find what movie they want to rent. It is not the same to just see titles online. Being able to physcially hold a DVD is liked by a lot of people.

I'd say online downloads isn't something to worry about, but vending machine style DVD rental machines will probably start taking off. They've been putting them in many grocery stores in the US and they can rent DVDs for MUCH cheaper than many other stores. I don't even go to rental stores anymore.

People thought that once VHS was created there was no need to go to the movies anymore. Well, that has decreased however, its not "out of fasshion". I would say you would at least have another 5 years in the DVD business if not longer. Cause there video games and things that people can't afford to buy but they rent. Same with movies. I don't buy all my movies, only ones that I had rented to went to see then said, hey, I want to buy that.

Oh, and I know many people from where I come from that don't have interent at home and don't have credit cards to use the online rental stuff.

First of all In 5 years DVDs will be like VHS tapes today. Today there are many different way to get DVDs. Most people get them from their cable company via Oi or Tivo. Some rent from the computer using Netflix or Blockbuster, but the point of the fact is if you can market and show that your rental shop is the best way to go, you might be able to beat the competitions. And yes they will go out of fashion, but not too soon.

Unless you jump on the wagon like Blockbuster it is more than likely it wont even take 5 yrs. As it is we do everything through Netflix and web sites now.

I haven't been to a dvd rental shop in sooo long. Most people I know get their music from itunes and their movies from netflix. I don't think physical rental shops will be around much longer, and the ones that are around now aren't doing very well.

eventually they will, its so much less cost to run a virtual store than it is a physical one although some people do enjoy the ability to go to the store and pick out your movies, its a form of socialism.. if you do consider it, keep online competitors in mind and also create a catchy nitch ala b&n & starbucks were people see it as a social atmosphere to hang out and yeah..RENT DVDs too... ;o)

Yes they actually may. iTunes has invented an online DVD renting program, where you buy this device that connects to your television and rent movies from iTunes online and play them on your television through that device.
