When you are living in the west bank of Luxor power failures are a daily part of life, especially in the summer when the system gets overloaded by a/cs.
We have candles and lighters strategically placed around the house even though we now have a back up generator, someones got to go out and switch it on.
But when I first came here we spent many unplanned candle lit evenings due to the very regular power failures.
You should see someone go into panic mode if the power goes out while a soccer match is being played, its a sight to behold, then I just call him Flash!
The worst time is when I am in the middle of washing my hair and its totally full of shampoo all of a sudden, not only darkness, but there's no hot water!
Actually power failures are part of the reason the famous roof garden came into being. It would be too hot indoors with no a/c so we'd migrate to the roof.
Many sweet memories have eventuated on that roof!

addit: Not all are of gazing at the lights of Luxor and the Nile either, sometimes you just cant avoid looking at the stars. he,he,he!.

Reikominder
Go to the balcony and start looking at the life outside my flat,

Or stay silent looking at the candles, and think deep,

Or go sit with my family talk abt anything ,

We need this from time to time :D

7ala is fluffy ?
The lights go out = i reach for my hubby, & the rest i cant tell you, hahahahahahaha.

Kalooka
the bright side of power failure is that it brings family together, sitting there in a comfortable place by candle lights, just talking, remembering some stories, laughing, experiencing pure human communication with no distraction from modern technology..

Amara

Meh, an all-night-no-power-fest .. siighh.. reminds me of the times when the power supply wasn't as steady as it is now :P When we realized that there wasn't going to be current for a whole night, we had a bunch of activities that we would almost immediately start off. Here are some of 'em..

1) Night Gazing : We would go to the terrace with our binoculars, a mirror and our wonderful eyes :D Watching the night sky (when there was no cloud cover ^^) is such a delight.. nothing matches up to it!

2) Torch Juggling (Parental Advisory Necessary :D) : We would take our torches, turn them on and start juggling, about three torches simultaneously :P It's fun for the viewers to watch the lights go UP.. and down... and UP.. and right.. and do a loop-de-loop :P

3) Sleep : Yups! Just sleep :D

I am just like Reiko, i head straight to the balcony or window, and i stare at the sky, ever notice how the stars shine more brightly and are easily seen when it's dark.

I am a star gazer ...... and some of my best moments ever are the ones when i am traveling on a deserted road late at night (preferably in the desert or by a secluded beach) and then i stop to the side of the road get out of the car, stand there in total darkness, star gazing, Ohhhhh its unexplainable, but so liberating and wonderful to me. I get such a rush and rainbow of emotions all at the same time. Beautiful.... just beautiful.
