far

It depends how drunk he is and if a stewardess is sitting on his lap.
239 miles, unless the visibility is poor.
Of course, if he's looking at the sun, thats 93 million miles.

Neil M
Absolute maximum around 500 miles.

But it is fairly rare that you can see that far because of cloud and haze.

When I was in a chipmunk in 1988 I could see 100 miles from 10,000 feet.

Edit: TallPaul above might actually be correct, thinking about it. 262 miles.
On a flight London to Amsterdam a couple of years ago I could see Paris, so that's 250 miles away at least.

As the old song says, "On a clear day, you can see forever". Or...far enough.

If it wasn't a clear day at 38,000' then the 'fog' won't be very thick.

If there's no cloud anywhere then he'll be able to see almost to the horizon. The atmosphere itself will create some haze in the distance. Do some simple trigonometry and you can calculate it yourself.

At the very least he'll see about 38,000' downwards.

On a clear night his visibility will be improved because he'll see a bright light may hundreds of miles away.

Far, but you cant really tell what you are looking at since everything is so bright. But there is not much to see in the air anyway. Looking towards the ground I will say 120-230 miles out. And in the air too. But sometimes the sun is very strong so the pilots cant see anything with out the sun visor down or sunglasses, and sometimes even the sunglasses dont help. Just search inflight cockpit pictures.
