Well, depends. The French (Europeans) have had their butts handed to them for SO long by Boeing that they took a risk and designed and built a plane that is MUCH bigger than Boeing's largest plane - the 747. *shrug* If you want to get into a "mine's bigger than yours" fight, then Airbus has the upper hand right now. The issue with the bigger planes is that it takes MORE fuel to fly the bigger planes! Thus, smaller margins. Granted, you can pack MORE sardines into your can, but the margins get smaller!
Boeing MAY have realized this years ago while it was winning the "mine is bigger than yours" fight with Airbus and decided that it was going to fight the "mine will be more efficient to use than yours" fight instead with its new 787.
The Europeans have a knack for re-fighting the last war! Ask ANY elderly Frenchman about the Maginot (sp?) Line. *laughter* The Jerries walked right through it like it wasn't there in the late '30s on their way to Paris.
Let them be proud of their accomplishment! Was it a wise decision to produce this plane? Who knows? They stepped up to the task, took the slings and arrows, and appear to have made it work! It may have been smarter to have had this plane flying 20 years ago when fuel prices weren't a concern.
Oh! One correction: the A380 has been test flying for MONTHS. This flight that you saw the media covering was the plane's first COMMERCIAL flight!
There are losers all over the world who like to think that they will become "famous" if they are among the "first-passengers" for a given aircraft. Just watch the video on Yahoo! It contains JUST one of these Gomers with his Wright Brothers Complex. *laughter*
They all want to think that they "share something" with the likes of the Wright brothers or Charles Lindburgh! *laughter* Soon, you may be seeing napkins and other trash that the passengers took from the plane's first commercial flight being sold to "collectors" on E-bay!
One of the issues with the A380, that the designers may have ignored or overlooked, is that airport owners have to lengthen their runways and enlarge the terminals in general to be able to accommodate these planes! So, this means that EVERYONE will have to pay MORE for these things to fly! This means higher landing fees for EVERYONE at the particular airport and higher taxes for people living in the vicinity of the airport as well if the airport's owner can swing it with the local officials.
This COULD be another mark AGAINST the plane. All passengers are going to have to pay for this upgrade in terms of higher ticket prices because airports are going to have to increase their landing fees on everyone to cover the costs of the upgrades to the runways and the terminals.
So passengers will be more likely to try to avoid airports, if they can, that are looking to upgrade due to it costing MORE to land there due to the efforts to upgrade to a capability so that A380s can land there as well. This plays RIGHT into Boeing's hands! They went with a smaller plane than the 747 that can utilize airports as they are today. No airport owner is going to have to upgrade his property to accommodate the 787.
This is a bucking frilliant plan on the part of Boeing!
Jeez! None of the other answers gives you anything other than what the media tell you! Too many of you are "inside-the-box" thinkers out there, people!
IMO, Airbus would be ahead of-the-game had it embraced the same leading-edge thought that Boeing seems to be embracing with the 787. Boeing is turning to lighter/stronger plastics to manufacture the plane's skin vs. the heavier/less efficient aluminum skin. What Boeing MAY do is take what it learns from the manufacture of the 787 with its new aircraft skin and apply it to a plane as large as the A380 that would make it less costly to operate and call it the 797.
Can anyone out there imagine the ROR on THAT platform? Whoa! It makes my head spin!
When it comes to commercial aircraft, being the FIRST out of-the-gate DOES NOT mean first over-the-line! *laughter* |

I think both aircraft manufacturers make a quality product. If one company was a lot better, then it would win a lot more orders. Right now I think Boeing has more aircraft on order in the year 2007 than Airbus. My preference is for Boeing aircraft.
The A380 just flew from Singapore to Sydney, Australia. People paid big bucks to fly that inaugural route. From what I hear, there was positive feedback and people enjoyed the flight.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been snagged with delays and the first delivery will be pushed back at least 6 months. ANA, the launch customer was hoping to use the 787 during the Olympics but that is not going to be happening. Delays do happen when a new aircraft is introduced. Hopefully Boeing can fix the problem quickly. |

As a passenger who mostly flies shorthaul on smaller airliners, I prefer Airbus to Boeing although there are more Boeing aircraft in service, even in Europe. |

12 months ago it was Airbus, but with the massive delays on the A380, the scandals within Airbus, and the huge success of Boeing 787, I would say Boeing is winning again.
Boeing was king and Airbus the upstart. Airbus knew that the only way to beat Boeing was to make better planes for cheaper prices. They did make barely better planes for better prices and took control of the industry. They became king.
It has come full circle and it looks like Boeing has regained the crown from a bloating Airbus. Yes the 787 is delayed by 6 months, its first delay announcement, but that is suppose to be the high end of the delay with it possibly being delayed by only 4 months. The A380 was delayed for 2 Years with several delay announcements as it could not meet its several moving target dates because of it huge bureaucracy. |

Boeing put their noses ahead with the 747 for long distance.
Then Airbus came back with short haul aricraft such as the A300 up to the A320, Boeing came back with the 737.
Then there was the war for mid distance. The A330, the 767.
Then the longer flights came in (B777, A340)
Now the A380 has came out, Boeing has the 787 coming out (mid-long distance). It's a close battle...wait another 10-15 years. A390's and 797's. I think the A390's and 797's will be looking to go short haul again as technology these days means that the business man does not have to travel as far. Demand will come back for short haul after these long flights start to pass again.
ANd by then, the 737 and A320's will be old and stale. |

Has any body thought that instead of a queue of 200 people at the passport control we now have 800.
We will never get out of the airport. |

Boeing. One problem with the new A380 is that it needs specially built skywalks to board the two levels. The Dreamliner will be able to use any standard gate at any major airport in the world without the airport having to redesign the gates for it. I think this will be a selling point for Boeing. Also, I personally like the interior design much better than the airbus. |
