Advice on flying and travelling alone?

Hi there

(Im on my bf's account by the way :) )

I am flying from Liverpool to Venice on sunday and have an anxiety disorder that makes flying very difficult. I just get it into my head that when the plane thrusts up after take off it will slide back down to the ground backwards and I end up crying and getting really really worked up. I also panic everytime the plane drops a little ... WHY DOES IT DO THAT!? lol.. the thing is I used to LOVE flying!

I just wondered if anyone had anything positive to say that might make me feel a little bit better about flying alone. I am flying with Ryan Air.. they have the same safety regulations right?

I don't want this fear of flying to destroy another trip, and need to be able to do this alone for the first tme.. my bf or mum is usually with me to comfort me but I need to be a big girl lol.

Any advice ? :)

Linda in Lancaster & lovin it!
*****First of all, Airline travel is one of the safest forms of transportation. When you figure how many people fly daily and how many accidents there are, the percentage is very, very low!

Secondly, compare that rate to the number of people involved in traffic accidents on roadways throughout the world! See how safe air travel is????

Third, I've been flying for almost 60 years and I've found if I sleep, nothing bothers me! Not a sudden noise, not a talkative seat partner, nothing! I'm usually asleep before we're off the runway!

Get a window seat, put a pillow next to the fuselage, and relax. You'll be there before you know it!

(I take Beta blockers, but I take them for high blood pressure. If you have low blood pressure and take a beta blocker, it could make you ill. I take something else for anxiety. . . . .)

get a book or a electronic toy and play some game with it and that i'll get your mind off of flying...i'm guessing but maybe something happen to you to make you afraid of flying? your ok kiddo the same person you were before...just relax.

hi-c
just remember for everytime the plane drops, it will rise up again. just think of it as hitting roadbumps. also avoid caffeine on the day of the trip.

Tell the flight crew as soon as you board, and don¡t be embarassed as many people suffer the same kind of symptoms. They can sit you near them, you should be ok then. Good luck

Hi. I have travelled back and fourth to the USA, NZ and Australia so many times I cant count. And heaps of those was by myself. I have never had any troubles with any planes - I luckily havent ever been in bad turbulance. The longest flight by my self was 16 hours - I just watch movies, read books and just relax. Here is a good website for you http://www.fearlessflight.com/airplane-disasters-plane-crash-statistics hopefully it will help!

I'm not sure why the doctor gave you beta blockers--they usually prescribe an anti-anxiety drug like lorazapam or zanax. Hypnotherapy is a great way to get over your fear of flying,if you can find a licensed therapist who does this. I wouldn't fly for years because of severe panic attacks. Even though the attacks stopped, I couldn't fly--it's not like you can practice to see if your ready. Someone recommended hypnotherapy and I was a bit skeptical, but I am now flying and have flown internationally. So, you can overcome your fears and fly! Good luck to you.

Take half of the medicine, use your Ipod, download some jazz and listen. If you dont do well on your trip, you wont be able to meet your boyfriend...think about how happy he will be when he sees you, and that you have accomplished flying on your own. Remember its just a mental thing.
YOU CAN DO IT.

Well Ryan air is a crappy flight company if you want comfort and all the other things that normal airlines have. But they are cheap and fly the exact same way everyone else does. Just remind yourself that you are a million times safer flying than you would be driving. I suggest you take something that will help you sleep, take an ipod or something like that, and then keep your window closed. Take the thing to make you sleepy about 10 minutes before you get on the plane. That way it will start kicking in even before you take off, and will hopefully wear off by the time you land.

I travel by myself all the time, and its never fun cause I would rather travel with my fiance, but I just remember how much fun I am going to have at the place I am traveling to, and that always makes it worth it :). You will be just fine!

You poor girl!

I have only travelled alone a couple of times but when I have done, I have always asked for a seat near the front and also on the aisle.

Take an ipod or ask for headphones so you can listen to music (do they have this on ryanair?)

Betablockers don't sound right to me - Ihave them for migraines but you can't just stop taking them! You have to be weaned off them like antidepressants.

Reading is not such a good idea cos you might be so anxious you won't be able to concentrate.

Bach's rescue remedy is very good. I think it works a bit psychosomatically but, what the heck? If you feel better so be it!

Enjoy the flight and look ahead to the good times you will have when you get there. The flight will soon be over

Take care

Couple of things:

1) If your beta blockers make you feel sick and drowsy, you should probably talk to your doctor. I think that tiredness is a reasonably common side effect, but I have not heard about the nausea. Perhaps he or she might consider a different prescription.

2) Have you tried Bach's rescue remedy? I don't know how much of it is down to a real physiological impact and how much to the 'placebo' effect, but I have always found that a few sprays of the Rescue Remedy on the back of my tongue is very soothing. You can buy it in any branch of Boots (including at most airports).

As someone else says, the likelihood of being injured or killed in a plane is many, many times lower than that of being involved in a car accident. Think of all the millions of flights that take place every year, without any incident.

I also have flight anxiety but you'll be fine, you really will - and Venice will make it all worthwhile!

Have a great trip!

Being in an airplane is like being in a buss, so do not worry on take off the airplane thrust it it self up to the air ,and once it is in its normal flight ,you will feel very happy and comfortable, do not worry if their will be an air pocket ,its only just a minute, the sensation is wonderful, you will fell very happy and not scared ,on landing it is only a routine procedure ,you wont know that the plane is on the ground

When you start to get worked up, think about how you plan to save the children if there should be an emergency. Also think about how you will comfort and help other passengers. When your bf and mum comfort you, you are playing the weak one and it's all about you. When you are alone, play the role of the strong one and it's about helping others. If you are old enough to have a bf, you are a big girl. The needy little girl is the exterior persona. The strong woman is inside. You can do it.
