I had a really bad experience with American one time and will look for any opportunity NOT to fly with them, even if it costs a little more.

My preferred airline for international trips is Air France, but I know not everyone else likes them. Continental is pretty good, too. On my recent trip to & from Paris, the Continental flight attendants made me feel very special (and for no reason).

I just did a quick search on expedia, and Air France has a 1 stop flight combination for $1402. Of course the fare is heavily dependent on when you're traveling, so the fare you could get might be much different. By the way, the same search returned fares of $1944 for United and $2107 for American.

The Shadow

Neither American or United actually flies to South Africa. They list flights in their schedules, but these are "code share" flights. If you book either American or United, they will actually put you on different airlines for part of the journey. Incredibly enough, this is legal.

I suggest one of the major European carriers if the price is right. Lufthansa and Air France are both pretty good.

Try checking Kayak.com. It searches many different websites and combines the results into one display. It is easy to search for low fares.

I'm a frequent flyer with american but they are quiet expensive, whta you probably want to do is go with local airlines, what i mean is, an airline not based in one country or something from south africa. However, good luck finding any non-stop flights, unless you fly Emirates, they have all the airbuses. although i would recommend Qantas if they have a hub down there.

yeah, try Delta, ever since they came out of bankruptcy they are pretty aggressive with their pricing

Well i haven't used any of the ones you've mentioned but why not try south african airlines? or virgin atlantic?

Neither of those fly direct, so kinda need to know where they connect? Try Delta via. Atlanta, South African Airways via. Atlanta, British Airways via. London, Lufthansa via. Frankfurt, Virgin Atlantic via. London or Swiss International via. Zurich.

Those would all be great choices, but if you must choose one of those, go with United. They may not be the best, but they're miles ahead of American!

I love Delta. Always a pretty good experience.

Never flown to South Africa, but I'm sure their international service is very comparable to their domestic service.

Nic, check out Delta. Their flights 785 to Atlanta and 34 to Johannesburg will run you $1780 round-trip. Much better than other carriers. It is a long way down there.

I've never flown American but recently flew United. It was pretty nice. Only one delay, and it was pretty minor. Their planes have a nice "economy plus" section which isn't as nice as first class but better than regular coach!
