There is a concern that the electronic equipment could interfere with the plane's navigation equipment. Although there is no known instance of this happening, it is theoretically possible.
Since the FAA cannot test every possible electronic gadget in every plane, in an abundance of caution, the FAA has simply put in very broad bans on electronic equipment. |

If you gave the attendants a hard time about it, they have the authority to confscate your stuff and kick you off the plane.
If you were on your cell phone while in flight, the passengers around you would likely beat the crap out of you because they don't want to hear your conversation. |

probably nothing...if its just one person. If everybody kept their cell on, something might happen because everybody's cell would be sending out signals constantly.
Ipods and CD players probably wont interfere with the plane's equipment, but I think the flight attendants ask you to turn them off during take off and landing because they want you to be aware of what is going incase something happens.
its better to be safe than sorry...turn off your phone on the plane |

If you leave your phone on in flight nothing will happen it won't affect the nav systems in anyway shape or form. My cell phone affects my car radio only when it is handshaking with the cell towers before ringing BUT it is only a few clicks and aircraft radios are not like broadcast radios their bandwidth and quality of signal are like the old CB radios or Ham radio. In addition the only time you are going to get a signal from a cell site is on arrival or departure because the cell site's antennas are pointed toward the horizion they aren't pointed up.
I can tell you if you plan on being a Kenny Tarmac type of person who must be on their phone all the time your fellow passangers will set your phone to vibrate and put it where your granny won't see it.
Other electronic devices are asked to be switched off because they want you to be paying attention in case they have to tell you to do something they don't want you listening to your tunes in an emergency. |

Mythbusters tests, were all bollocks. Wrong equipment, etc.
The crew in the cockpit can tell if there's something operating. Static they get is a dead giveaway. If you don't shut it off, you get kicked off the flight. If you're already airborne, you will be met by the cops for failure to obey crew instructions. |

Well, not to mention that on air travel altitude receiving anything from your carrier might become hard... |
