Am I allowed to carry on a tote bag, backpack AND a purse?

I've been looking through the carry-on rules for Delta and Northwest Airlines and it says that only one carry-on luggage and one personal item is allowed. Does that mean I should only carry my purse and tote bag (or backpack)? I guess this confuses me cuz I'm use to traveling with my mom and sister and it feels like we carry more than this. (This is my first time traveling alone)

I flew a few weeks ago, and security stopped me and made me put my small purse inside my carryon. That was an airport rule, not the airline. If I were you I would make sure there is room inside your tote bag or backpack for your purse.

Just one bag and one purse unless you have a baby. Then you can have a purse, one bag and a diaper bag..So just take your purse and tote bag (or backpack)

I use a large enough carry on that I can stick my purse in it.
I wouldn't use a tote bag as if it falls over things can spill out.

What's so hard to figure out?

One carry on, and one personal item.

Tote bag and purse are personal items. Chose one or the other, or combine the two.

It's usually only an issue if it's a full flight, they often look the other way if you're over the two item limit by just a purse or camera bag. Medical travel bags for insulin don't count to the limit either but they can't legally separate someone from their insulin.

If they make a fuss over it, all that happens is the carry-on suitcase gets checked in at the gate. Depending on how disorganized they are, they might even forget to charge you the check-in fee. Bags checked in at the gate are the last ones stowed in the cargo bays so they're the first ones off. Checking the bags in at the gate used to be the trick to have your bags at the carousel first.

Before 9/11, I would never check in a bag because with a carry-on, you can't loose your bag and you can catch an earlier flight on stand-by plus you save the time waiting for the bags to get offloaded so you get the first taxis, choice of rental cars, etc. After 9/11, I checked in the bag simply to avoid having to leave something behind if they deemed something too dangerous to bring aboard. The bags take a horrible beating when checked in so expect to loose the zipper fobs, wheels, and handles to the conveyor belts and be prepared to buy a replacement bag if it gets split at the seams.

One bag and don't try to be smart my using a big one.

Muffins! (The Original)
You're only aloud one carry-on per person.
