I often lock myself in the flight deck lavatory, especially when I'm feeling overcome with fear on long flights. Sometimes it's just OK to cry and let out the tension piloting a long transatlantic flight can bring.

GOD bless you-

There is a button to push for assistance if you get locked in.

No need to worry.

No worries; the lock is a sliding mechanism (right to left or vice-versa). When you enter, either push or pull the handle in the center of the door; reverse this process when you exit the lavatory.

IF you happen to get "stuck" in there, a call button is near the sink for your convenience; the stewardesses will be able to open the door for you.

Good Luck!

One mistake that I see people do and yes I fell for it as a preteen on my first flight was to assume that the bathroom occupied light was some sort of automatic detector. It's wired to the lock and lights whenever the door is locked. Every now and then you'll see a newbie go to the bathroom and the occupied light not light up, then someone else goes in much to their mutual surprise, then the bathroom occupied comes on.

On occasions it'll be a couple that knows each other, there isn't a yelp of surprise and they both remain in the bathroom followed by rhythmic sounds after the occupied light comes on.

It is normal to be a little nervous prior to your first air flight. People tend to either like flying or not. Although your flight is quite long, do take time to eat properly (eat light food in the few days leading up to your flight date), get plenty of rest before leaving on your trip the week before, try to eliminate stress, take non-perishable snacks with you in case of flight delay, and do not worry about the lavatory. It will be quite roomy, in comparison to short flight planes. Everything is well-labelled and straight forward. If you do not find anything clear, just ask the flight attendants and they will help you. After all, that is their job and they are quite willing to help people to make it a comfortable trip for everyone. Bon voyage!

No worry. There is a clearly marked locking system. If there is any question ask the flight attendant to demonstrate it.

A very simple system...you'll be fine. Just don't for get it's $.50 per use. You'll have to leave it in the blue cup before you enter. lol...just kidding.
