Any suggestions to entertain a 6 yr old while on a VERY long flight?

I am travelling with my family in Jan from US to AU including my 6 yr old. I am looking for suggestions to entertain her while we fly. We have a Leapster and paper and pens. Any suggestions that have worked for you? Thanks!

Im a flight attendant and I run in to this all the time, I would say that Game boys and portable DVD players are your best bet! Stickers and playdough. Anything your child is intested in at home just lug it on the plane it will be worth it!

Books (to read) are a must. Activity books (stickers, puzzles, etc) and coloring books are also great. Laptop and/or portable video player (for DVDs and digital media) are essential, although most overseas flights I've been on tended to have seatback video which is also an option. You will be served snacks/food, but doesn't hurt to bring some of your own as well. Blank paper is a great idea, as is the Leapster. If your child has a favorite stuffed animal, doll/action figure, or other toy that isn't too big, bring that along as well.

Enforcing a nap or two is also essential. She may not feel like it and resist, but it will be better for all in the end.

Whatever you decide to bring, make sure that 1) it's not too bulky, 2) won't make a huge mess, and 3) can be carried by your child. We have our daughter put her things in her own backpack and tell her she is responsible for them (which is about right for a 6 year old).

Finally, nix the benadryl approach. I would only recommend that for infants.

Portable DVD players are great. That way you can bring along things that your child likes to watch. While there should be inflight entertainment, there may not be to much to keep a 6 year old occupied for very long. Bring a deck of cards. There are many games a 6 year old can play such as Old Maid, Go Fish, War, etc. You can look up other games online for more ideas. Maybe a small pack of crayons for the paper, or grab a coloring book. Hopefully he/she will sleep a lot on the flight!

Coloring book and maybe a laptop to watch movies (or a portable dvd player)

I bought magnetic games. Ludo, snakes and ladders etc, and they worked a treat! Plus try not to let them sleep too much the night before helps too.

get a children's audiobook or another children's book for drawing, cutting out, etc. Barnes & Noble has a good choice; or go to arts and crafts store ( Michael's for example). They have a lot of things that would entertain kids especially now, around the hlidays. Another option is a game like Monopoly but an easier one.

Enjoy your trip!:)

as everyone else has said paper and pens, markers and crayons, puzzles... and anything else your child enjoys doing that she can do on the plane........ the stewardesses usually hand out kits full of stuff to do for children as well ( atleast when I was young they did) but remember on the plane they also have the personal tvs and they always have cartoons on, when I was young I would always watch them to pass the time...... happy travels to you!!!!

a good storybook, or a puzzle/find the word booklet, coloring pencils, portable game devices, Game boy or PSP, most airlines will provide a selection of cartoons, hope they will fall asleep when she gets bored..

have a safe trip :)

CT
Children's Benadryl. Helps keep the ears open and helps them sleep - and, no, it is not dangerous at all.
