Any tips for jet lag? |
Travelling to Asia for just a couple of days and can't afford to be wiped out - anyone have any useful tips for both while I am there and then when I get home again and have a bit more time to recover? Additional Details Sorry forgot - last time I went to Australia I slept plenty on the plane but had dreadful jet lag for about 4 days |

If you're travelling from the UK, you will more than likely feel wiped out for a day or two - you'll feel much better after the return journey though. I live in Asia, though am Scottish, and make this journey several times a year. The other answers about drinking plenty quite right, but avoid alcohol on the flight, it'll make you feel worse. Set your watch for local time as soon as you're on the plane and try and act as if that is the "real" time. Once you arrive, the one thing that does really seem to work for me (I was advised by a seasoned traveller when I first got here) is to have a coffee every hour for the first day - and don't go to bed until it's night time where you are. Get out in the sunshine too, it helps! |

Firstly, drink lost of water on the plane, make sure you get up and move around lots, and take an aspirin for a few days before, during and after your trip to minimise the risk of DVT. I have done several long haul flights and always seem to feel wiped out. As others have suggested, try and sleep on the plane - easier said than done. When you arrive in Asia, try and adjust to the time difference straight away. If you arrive in the afternoon, try and wait to go to bed at the normal time in the evening. If you arrive in the morning you may need a short nap (no longer than 2 hours) then stay up for the rest of the day. Try and get up at the normal time the next morning. If you wake up really early try and get back to sleep. Good luck and have a great trip! |

I travel quite a lot and find this helps. When I arrive I have a little to drink but stay up for as long as I can or until night time then sleep until I wake up on my own. I find that my body clock adjusts more quickly.... |

Don't know where you're staying but I usually got a terrible jetlag when flying from West to East but felt much better if flying from East to West. The technique I used before flying from west to east (thailand to Miami) is that I tried to stay awake for 24-36 hours before checking in to the plane (very early morning, 5 am.). When I boarded the plane, I'd ignored most of the meals served and took a long deep sleep (ignoring the time in the plane or wherever I stoped over) until breakfast being served prior to landing on the US soil.
When landed at LA or SFO, it's early morning and time for me to connect the flight to Florida. This day flight, I did enjoy my meals, reading magazines, watching movies and enjoy nice scenaries without sleep. When arrived Miami, I already had full day to adjust myself to its time. The last trip I flied I felt better and didn't have any jetlag problem (I used to have severe jetlag and can't control my eyelids even while I's attending the meeting, but not with this trip)
With this technique, I'd sacrificed almost all meals in the plane from bangkok to US but it worths as it made me feel better and I can do my business right away when arrived my destiny.
On the way back, it's another matter. . This time, I spent most of my time drinking, watching movies and reading books. Might take only short sleep but not that much like I did on the other direction. The plane landed on Thai soil at night and I just went straight to my bed and got up fresh the next morning without jetlag. The next morning, I just went to play golf with my friends and felt great to be back home. |

Jet lag: Fatigue, Disorientation, Lack of concentration and motivation, Broken sleep after travel, Dehydration, Discomfort of legs and feet.
The cause of Jet lag is the rapid transit across world time zones.
Time difference disrupts the body clock (circadian rhythm)
It effects body temp.heartbeat, blood pressure, and physiological patterns leading to mental & physical fatigue.
Drinking plenty of spring water and juices is better than consuming quantities of alcohol.
Eat till you feel full but not uncomfortable.
Move your feet and legs and walk around, stretching all your muscle groups in turn.

Don't fly
Flying cost the earth. It is the most polluting form of transport, and the fast growing emittor of greenhouse gases. You are an extremely selfish person if you are flying, and you obviously don't care about yourself or anyone else in the world cos your gonna wreck it by doing this |
