You need to equalize the pressure between your inner and outer ear, so you need some way to keep the air and your ear parts moving....
Sucking on candies, mints or cough drops can help. Or swallowing drinks can help. Also, just opening and closing your mouth a lot can help. Eating things also helps since that makes you swallow as well.
If you have allergy problems, a cold, or other reasons your sinuses are not quite clear, you might want to consider taking decongestants or using a nasal spray to open up your sinuses during take off and landing, in particular. Your doctor can probably help you with recommendations for over-the-counter medications for this and tell you if you have any other health problems which might preclude you taking either type of medication. |

Yawning, drinking, and chewing are all possibly helpful. |

Your ears need to pop to equalise the pressure both going up and going down. If they did not you would experience tremendous pain. It is not just your ears but your sinuses which are hollow tubes found in your cheeks and forehead. Indeed if your ears did not pop you would likely suffer a serious injury as the pressure found a way to break through tissue to escape. Not a nice thought!
Chewing gum, sucking sweets, sipping water to make you swallow are good. Going through the motions of a dry swallow will usually work. Clamping the nostrils and blowing against them is the most efficient way.
Blowing against closed nostrils for a few days before does not condition things but what it can do is assist in easing any congestion in the Eustachian tube which links the middle ear with the pharynx and allows pressure to equalise both sides of the eardrum. |

The combination of chewing gum & opening my mouth real wide often works for me. I have sinusitis & that makes matters worse when flying, so I take sinus meds & use nose spray before I fly. |

I've used "Ear Planes," soft little ear plugs you can get in any pharmacy or Wal-Mart. They help with the popping and the pain. |

I'm sorry I don't have any more suggestions, but chewing gum is the most effective thing I have found so far (that works for me). I didn't have any luck with the ear plugs at all. |

Start conditioning your ears 24 hours in advance of your flight. Do this by plugging your nose and trying to blow through it lightly. Do this over and over again and it should help. It is what is advised by scuba divers who have the same effects with the ears as persons do flying. |

Yawning is the best thing to do aside from chewing gum. Just open your mouth wide and try a big yawn. it works all the time. |

Chewing gum, yawning, swallowing, or hold your nose shut and keep your mouth shut and at the same time try and blow air out your nose that'll pop your ears pretty good. |

There is no way to prevent your ears from popping in a plane ascent or descent. They would explode if they didn't from the change in air pressure. |

When I used to fly from the UK to the US, I always sucked a hard mint - or any hard candy - seemed to work... |
